If I could only have one S&W it would be a 4" 44 Mag.
The Wife and I carry S&W 44 Mag Mountain Guns whenever we are in the field.
Be sure and get some Speer Shot Shells.
They work great for snakes, rabbits, squirrels, grouse and other small game.

That's identical to the 629-2 Mountain Revolver except for the laser engraving. Nice find. It's one of 500 or fewer made. They were called Mountain Guns starting with the 629-3 I think.
Great gun!!! Nice find i love my 629-3 mtn. gun it would defenilty be the last to go if i had to have a fire sale.

Yep, I'm guessing that that particular revolver is #262 of 500...

It was part of the Twelve Revolvers set made in 1990 for Ellett Brothers. It was the March edition.

I've owned #336 of this series since about 1990 or so. Bought it from a Kansas dealer who was at the gun show in Denver and kept it unfired until just recently because I had a Mountain Revolver. I gave the MR to my son and am really enjoying the Lion now. It's a great shooter.

I have a 629-2 Mt Revolver and the 629-2 Mt Lion andthe two gun while being the same aren't the same to fire. The Mt Lion doesn't kick nearly as much as the Mt Revolver and it has a higher velocity. I have no clue why. The Mt Lion has a slightly larger B/C gap as well. I still enjoy them both.
Im not a collector and I plan to shoot and carry the gun. Has anyone ever holstered one? How durable is the laser engraving? What holster would you recommend if any for outside the pants while camping or as a backup while hunting. Thanks for u guys help. One more question how much should I have paid for this specimen? Just Curious.

It would be really nice to know, especially since the "faster" gun has the larger B/C gap. Anyway, nice guns!

My Mountain Lion is my second Mountain Gun, the first being a Springfield Armory Commemorative 625-4. I bought the Lion on impulse in unfired condition at a gun show within the last year. Mine came with the same wood grips as in the original post but it now wears Miculek Grips. This combination is great for concealed carry but brutal with any serious loads. I have ordered and used numerous Jordan Troopers in the past and find that they are always too big for my dainty hands. I would also like to cut the hammer spur off mine but have never done this to a chromed hammer. The plating on the trigger is very poor and uneven. Trigger return is also the most uneven and notchy of any S&W revolver I have ever owned. My Mountain Lion would be an excellent shooter and carry gun once all the minor little details are sorted out.

I had two of the 29-3 and sold them keeping the newer 29-5 I think as it matched my 657 and 625 .45 ACP MGs.
If you have not tried the Speer .44 Magnum 200 grain Gold Dot HP Short Barrel Load do so...1080 fps with a bullet made to expand at .44 Special velocities...really nice to shoot and the bullet turns inside out...

S&W says the engraving would not be worn off by holster carry of these guns and, if someone actually wanted it off, it would have to be polished off. I suspect that would be a lot of work too.
I usually carry mine in a Kramer horse hide holster which works well enough. Haven't noticed any wear to be concerned about.

The only time I carried mine I used an old Heiser holster which seemed to work quite well. No wear on the revolver was evident from the holster.

There seem to be two weight classes for the 4" mountain guns, maybe more. I have seen 625 mountain guns in both 39 ounce and 36 ounce versions. I had a 36 ounce 45 Colt version and it kicked hard with anything stronger than factory-type loads. I think the 3 ounce difference is in the barrels.

Both of mine are the 629-2 and are identical in size weight and engineering features. I have a couple 29-5 Classic's that have a similar difference between them in recoil.

I have a model 620 that could qualify as a "moutain gun". It has a 4" barrel and weighs 37 ounces. These light guns are meant to be carried alot and shot a little. They are a handful even with factory ammunition.
