    Model 58 find

I bought this Model 58 at a show in central PA yesterday. I have a question about the SN. It is S256640. The Standard Catalog of S&W says the first production ran from S256500 to S260632, but Jinks says the first production run was from S258032 to S260632. Everyone seems to agree that the...

Date and price check on 586 6-inch, please

Gary7, Thanks for the reply. That's about what I figured, extrapolating the dates in the Catalog. What do you mean by the "M" in the crane area? Are you referencing the Model #? If so, yes, it does have Mod. 586 stamped in the crane, under the SN. Froggfuzz

Date and price check on 586 6-inch, please

Greetings, I just bought a 99+% 586 no dash and am curious about its date of manufacture ( I know it's between 1980 and 1986) and its value, compared to the $425 I paid for it. The SN is AJY4xxx. It's a six-inch model. The Standard Catalog lists SN's, but not the AJY prefix. I know that the...

    Mag interchangability??

Good information, Hawgleg. Thanks. I did get the magazine from nickelsmith and it is an older non-"A" type with the aluminum follower. It holds only 15 rounds however, not 16. The after-market magazines I got from whatacountry.com, hold 15 rounds. They seem to work OK, though I only ran some of...

    Mag interchangability??

JudgeColt, thanks for your input. What do you mean by the "Non-A" magazines? Are you referring to the serial number prefix? Froggfuzz

    Mag interchangability??

GWCustom, I liked the old Columbus shows the best; Cleveland was great, too, but I'm in central PA and it's a long way to the shows now; I've kept up the membership, hoping that at least a few of the shows might be closer to me. Thanks for you reply and for the information about the magazines...

    Mag interchangability??

Thank you, GWCustom, for your prompt reply. I just bought a nickel Model 59 in unfired condition, or it was until I ran a full magazine of my crappiest reloads through it without a hitch. That prompted me to start looking for more magazines. It came with one S&W mag and one 30-round magazine...

    Mag interchangability??

Does the magazine interchangeability work backwards as well? That is, do the later magazines work in the Model 59?
