I bought this Model 58 at a show in central PA yesterday. I have a question about the SN. It is S256640. The Standard Catalog of S&W says the first production ran from S256500 to S260632, but Jinks says the first production run was from S258032 to S260632. Everyone seems to agree that the "diamond" grips indicate a first production gun (and mine are numbered to the gun).

What is the value of one in 97% or so condition?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

I'd hazzard a guess as to somewhere north of $1000 these days. 58's have become very much in demand over the last two years, though in this economy, prices have softened somewhat since the initial obama rush. Being an early version helps.:)

Those are very much in demand. For price, I would only be guessing, so go with Gun 4 Fun said.

Thank you Gun 4 Fun and Jack Flash for your opinions. As always I appreciate and value the information provided on this site.

Picked up my one and only M-58 NIB complete with box and docs. for 900 OTD at show in Tucson back in June. The lowest price I've seen lately was on a local clasified web page @ 475 for a beater with Pac. grips - it was sold in 15 minutes from time of posting.

I recently picked up a model 58 serial number S2569XX for $850 without any box or tools. I think that the history of S&W must have a typo in the data as I have seen many in the S 256XXX range.:D

Lucky dog! Very nice. I would love to put together a small M&P collection. Model 10 4 inch and snub, Model 13 4 inch and a Model 58. Congrats!
