It looks like the cylinder was not machined down enough. My 340PD cylinder outside diameter measured between the flutes and lock up grooves is 1.308. Do you have a dial caliper?

What is the part of the gun that I have highlighted? My 340 PD does not have that nor do any of my other S&W revolvers. It seems that that lines up perfect with the marks on the cylinder. Or is that the corresponding wear mark on the frame?

If you polish it to much it may look like this :)
By mistake I was to agressive trying to clean the face of the cylinder. I removed the coating off the face of the cylinder by applying to much pressure and abrasive chemicals. I liked the look of it and decided to polish the complete cylinder...
I thought that I had also read the the lighter bullets are also shorter allowing more flame cutting which caused erosion vs a longer bullet keeping the flame cutting to a minimum.
I have already shot @ 25 rounds of .357 reloads (mine and mild, 158 grain) thru it with only the face of the cylinder polished. Cleaning was easy with no erosion evident. It has not been shot with the complete cylinder polished. I can not not see what difference that would make.
