Cleaning a 340PD Cylinder

This has probably been addressed in a previous thread but please indulge me. My new-to-me 340PD has dark marks on the outside of the cylinder from being shot (I'm NOT talking about the rings on the front of the cylinder face). I use Hopps or other things on my steel cylinder guns but have heard that will damage the titanium 340PD, and the info that came w/the gun from S&W isn't much help. Can someone give me some guidance?

Try using an pen eraser to clean up those dark rings on the cylinder face.

Never-Dull

Never Dull will clean any powder fouling off of any surface. I don't know how it would react with the titanium.

If you polish it to much it may look like this

By mistake I was to agressive trying to clean the face of the cylinder. I removed the coating off the face of the cylinder by applying to much pressure and abrasive chemicals. I liked the look of it and decided to polish the complete cylinder. I have been shooting the gun for few months now and have not seen any corrosion or erosive issues.

I have always used a little Noxon, to clean the marks on the outside of the cylinder with no problems. I have found that the newer cylinders are not as forgiving as the ones made 10 years ago.

I wipe mine down with Hoppes 9. The color is still in place, but it is not affecting function. That's all I do.

I am reminded of my neighbor who used to wax his Corvette every weekend. After a year the primer was showing through.

My father believed in "benign neglect". Take care of the needed maintence, but don't overdo it. This is a case where that would be good advice. The risk of damage to the gun is greater for overmaintaining it than for undermaintaining it.

For me, as long as function remains good, I will just wipe it down with Hoppes 9.

The factory recommends Breakfree, I believe. The literature that came with the gun should say in there somewhere. I use mineral spirits on my 340PD. I get off what I can and don't worry about the rest. If you clean it one day and set it aside, you can usually come back the next day and do away with what remains without a lot of scrubbing. I would not use polishes of any kind.
