I bought a m648 cylinder and had it fitted by a gunsmith to my 17-2. It was close but I needed better hands than I have . Anyhow wow accuracy was/ is fantastic !
I don’t think you have to sv bullets as others shoot lots of different ammo in their guns . M-617-2 came with alloy cylinder and they shot well , some had issues and S&W replaced them with a stainless cylinder. You might try gunparts.com and be able to buy a cylinder for a 617 to shoot a variety...
