I picked up this 17-8 at a pawn shops several years ago. SCSW says they were made from '96 to '99. This one is a '96 model. Does anyone have an approximate number of -8's that were made?

I posted this several years ago and got no responses so I'll try again. Due to the alloy cylinder I only shoot it with CCI Standard Velocity ammo.

Smith and Wesson only makes as many as they can sell of each revolver. They don't publish that information. Likely the number is confidential.

I don’t think you have to sv bullets as others shoot lots of different ammo in their guns . M-617-2 came with alloy cylinder and they shot well , some had issues and S&W replaced them with a stainless cylinder. You might try gunparts.com and be able to buy a cylinder for a 617 to shoot a variety of ammo if you’re concerned and want to keep it original if you ever sell it. Just a thought.
