To you Really Good Shooters -

As a 38/44 collector, I had the opportunity to try many of the same models for target shooting. While I doubt few would declare the 38/44 Heavy Duty to be a target gun, what I learned is there is a lot of sample to sample variation. There are good shooters, there are ok shooters. You can get...

Reminder to backup your computer often

Good advice. I keep a rotating quarterly backup set at my ranch which is hundreds of miles away for safe keeping.

    Calling All Rock Hounds!

Guys. Before the thread gets locked for being drug related, acid to a geologist is weak muriatic acid to check if the carbonates have been dolotomized. Basically you put a few drops of weak acid on the suspected carbonate and if it fizzes it a still carbonate, or if it does not it is then...

    38/44 original ammo specs.

I chrono-ed original 38/44 ammo out of 3 different 38/44's. Do a search on my name for the post and threads. I can't access the data due to hard drive issues right this minute but I normally aim for my reloads to be between 1150 and 1200 for 158's out of a 5" HD. Pretty stout loads. I tend...

Reminder to backup your computer often

I fired up the server today and doing its normal boot I get a warning from one of my software packages that I have a hard disk caution. After a bit of diagnosis I have determined that 2 of my hard drives are having SMART warnings and I am having two drives with speed warnings and access...

    Calling All Rock Hounds!

As a geologist they look like middle grade metasediments. Basically cooked and compressed sand, gravel and shale. Hard to really identify with out a streak plate, a decent microscope or hand glass and some acid.

    Land buying advice?

Survey is critical before the sale. Walk the land. Know exactly what you are getting. Make sure you have good water. Don't buy where it floods. Don't buy too much land. Make sure you buy enough that the local government entities can't hassle you as much. Buy enough to legally shoot on if...

    38/44 Load developement ?'s

Do a search on my name. I did a fair amount of 38/44 testing along with several others. With the 173 LSWC, I load 7.0 grns of 4756 in my guns. With the 158 LSWC I use 7.5 grns of 4756 with the current lot I am using. I bought over 50 lbs of 4756 in one lot (7 8 lb jugs) so I am set and that...

    Oil mid $30s

Lower for longer is the new motto of those like me who are laid off. This looks grim like it could go on for years instead of months now. My personal guess is we will be in the 20's by February or March when Iran starts to dump oil. There are lot of industry articles about it, but the...

Did you get trigger job...how did it turn out?

I bought a Python that had a bad factory trigger. It looked great, but the trigger stank. That is why I bought it cheaply. I took it to Teddy Jacobson back about 2002. I believe he charged me about $125 for the work. He took a poor gritty nasty trigger and turned it into a work of art. It...

    Reasons To Chronograph Your Loads

I use my chrono as a proxy for pressure. With handguns, the pressures are harder to discern so I would rather use velocity as a proxy to indicate if I am going into territory I had not planned on. Is it correct? No. Is it better than just guessing? Yes.

38-44 reloads with or without magnum primers ??

Without. Basically I have concluded that I don't need small pistol magnum primers at all anymore. My last hold out with the 357 magnum and it appears from testing that with 2400 you don't need them down here in Texas. Too warm for issues. So once they are burned up, no more small mags for me.
