How does the 686 rate among other SW revolvers?

It is completely subjective, but my 6" 686-3 is such a pleasure to shoot, that its difficult to imagine another pistol being any better. As good perhaps, as for being better I doubt it.

    Cleaning a 686

I agree with oysterhead that a nylon brush is preferable to a brass one. I just have trouble finding them. The ballistol works well for me.

S&W has the worst customer service i have ever seen

Glad to hear your problems are being addressed, and that you are satisfied with the way it is being handled. Good luck with your "like new" 642 when you get her back.

    S&W 686 4" no dash PIC'S ADDED!

I agree with Chaosrob. You know she functions fine when not needed, it'd be nice to know that she functions properly when or if needed.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BARREL LENGTH ?

Well I have model 686 with a 6 in. that is a joy to shoot. The only other I've had any experience with is a friends 44 mag. with an 8 in., which was equally pleasant. Never shot a S&W wheel gun that I didn't love.

New gun (1955), new member (1951)

Congrats on your new revolver, and good fortune with same Kentucky Dave. Wecome to the forum.

How do you S&W guys roll?

For me it just depends on the potential need for engagement. If I'm going into what I anticipate is a hostile enviorment (which I try to avoid if at all possible) then my 1911 is locked an loaded.

Which is easier to reload 44spl or 45acp?

Seeing that you have a 44spl L frame coming and plan on reloading for it, I would go with the N frame 44spl as well. It is more economical to reload in one caliber. You will have fewer components to purchase and store, and less chance for any sort of a mix-up. Not that it would be all that...

    Dilemma: 681-3 or 686-4

    Poll - Favorite Range Ammo

Other than .223 my favorite ammo for all applications is home grown for all the reasons Russell stated. When it comes to .223 I buy american eagle when on sale, and stock up.

    M686 Polished

Nice work got2hav1. My 686-3 could do with some spruceing up. I guess it's time to grab some mag polish, a microfiber cloth, and go to town on her. I hope I can achieve a similar final product.

    686, .357 magnum 4"

I'm sure they priced the gun with some wiggle room. If it is in great condition and you really love it, make them an offer.

    .40 vs .45 caliber

I agree with all that has been previously stated and would just add that I prefer an all metal pistol when shooting .45acp. My .40S&W I go with a polymer pistol for thr obvious reasons.

If you could only have one!

I will go with my 6" 686-3. I'm large enough to put her in a shoulder holster and conceal comfortably. Accuracy, range, and power. For me the perfect package. If it were'nt I'd have bought something different in the last 22 years. "Merry Christmas to all"
