Mike,
Start by investing in a copy of Blue Book of Gun Values. Keep in mind the values given are best regarded as comparative, not absolute; book values always lag behind the current market. Gunbroker.com is a great place to find out what guns are actually selling for right now 'cos people...
All mechanical things have a break-in period; how ya treat 'em during that period affects how the moving parts settle in to one another. I bathe all my side arms in CLP between outings. There's nothing better you can do for 'em other than shoot 'em a lot. Keeps all the moving parts playing nice...
1. Go here and your problem is solved.
2. As with any magazine-fed gun, slam the mag in. It's likely gonna take a harder slam with a smaller pistol--just the nature of the beast.
3. These guns loosen up real nice after you fire a few hundred rounds. Be patient. Everything about it will become...
Pardner, if you wanna swap straight across extended mags for standard mags, Sam's yer man... gotta be 40 Shield tho. Sam don't mess around with sidearm lead lighter than 158 grains...
For an M&P 15-22 fun gun, no reason to spend anywhere near hundreds of dollars. You won't be using it as a defensive weapon, so it ain't a critical application. And 22LRs don't test the mettle of sights like the defensive calibers do, so ruggedness ain't much of an issue. By FAR your best bang...

The point in saying they were obvious was so as not to have to get into them, assuming folks in this forum would already know... but sighting and proper slide function would top the list. Then we could wade into issues of consistency...
Those spacers do move. You'll find out soon enough. And if it's even a smidge outta whack, the magazine won't lock.
The better half and I both carry 40 Shields. We have a dozen or so standard mags between us (all with grip extenders). We use the extended mags that came with the sidearms only at...
Your Shield chambered in .40 Smith & Wesson was built to fire 180 grain chunks of lead. I recommend shooting the intended weight of lead outta any sidearm for a number of obvious reasons... but that's just me.
