    S&W .38 Fourth Model

Thanks for the opinions, truly appreciated. Serial number is 514671. This gun is a shooter as is and I agree, wouldn't spend a dime on it, just buy it, clean it and shoot it. I offered $125 OTD....we will see.

    S&W .38 Fourth Model

I have to agree with most that said it....once you buy an Antique S&W, others will find their way into your collection! I am looking for advice on the gun pictured below. The revolver locks up very tight, chamber is very tight, hammer drops and stays as it should. Overall cosmetic condition...

    Factory Letter Turnaround Times

I mailed my request for a Jinks letter on December 5 and received the letter on Jan 17. The letter was dated January 11 and my check was cashed on Dec 9 which indicated to me it was received and being attended to! Very happy with the letter and turn around time. Best, Marvin

    44 cal Top Break

The Jinks Letter arrived today! It confirms my revolver is a .44 Winchester Double Action Frontier which is now known as a 44-40. The gun was shipped August 8, 1890 and delivered to E.K. Tryon Co. in Philadelphia Pa. Most importantly, the letter confirms the gun is all original as it was...

    44 cal Top Break

Again, thanks to everyone for your insight and answers to my questions. Is it possible to identify the successors to my gun through the years? This gun has really piqued my interest in Smith & Wesson and would like to add a couple affordable stablemates to my Top Break. Any suggestions? Marvin

Again, thanks to everyone for the solid advice on my antique Smith & Wesson. So....I have a local gunsmith that really wants to work on my revolve, says it will be simple to make it safe to shoot. Conventional wisdom says to be patient and wait for the letter, then send the gun to Chicoine for...

    Cheap 64's on Gun Broker

All, I heard from Ryan this morning and the 64's are sold out but he said a new batch was on the way. He did not give an ETA but said it was a done deal and they would be available soon. Marvin

    Cheap 64's on Gun Broker

Interesting the 64's are advertised at $249 on the Sportsmans website. Seems like a good deal if I could get one with wooden grips.

    44 cal Top Break

Well my forensic skills continue to improve thanks to the suggestions of forum members! I was able to get the grips off, I do not see any dating inside the grips although I do see a number of markings. Both grips have an X scribed in the bottom left corner, both grips have the initials WB at...

    44 cal Top Break

And yes, it is a 44-40 caliber with a 1 and 9/16 chamber.

    44 cal Top Break

Thanks again for the advice and as I am excited to own such a classic and do want to shoot I absolutely will not even consider shooting the gun until I am certain it is safe to do so! Luckily David Chicoine is located about 2 hrs from me and I will be shipping the gun to him after I recieve my...

    44 cal Top Break

Thanks and yes, the cylinder length is 1 9/16 and it is a 44-40 which I assume makes it a Frontier DA 44-40. I will find out for certain when The Letter arrives. I decided to leave well enough alone and not remove the grips. I don't think the risk/reward is worth it. Can't wait to shoot my...
