It's a decock/safety. I have a some older 645's and now looking forward to seeing how this 4506 shoots in comparison. Some dry fire already shows the trigger to be better and sights better for my eyes.
Thanks very much for the replies!
Thanks 18DAI.
The slide certainly looks factory original or at least sent back to S&W for the work.
No indications on the box beyond year (1992) and just the usual papers came with it.
Pictures attached:
I picked up a 4506-1 that has forward cocking serrations on the slide. I had not seen that before and cannot find pictures of another via Google search.
Has anyone seen or own one? Wondering if it was a special order or just rare.
I just sent back a 627 Performance Center manufactured in October 2010 for the same issue. So this happens to even their "high end" line.
Send it back and get it fixed. You may have to pay shipping, but I bet you do not get charged for the repair.

This is the second 627 UDR, the last was replaced for a long list of issues too numerous to mention.
So I will be monitoring this thread as...
Hey thanks for the replies folks.
I use Corrosion X and store in either VCI bags or BoreStore's. Goldenrod and desiccants in use, etc. Never an issue until this gun came back from S&W. Issue clearly related to the blueing salts.
Some Kroil and and a brass brush sound like the fix for...
I had S&W re-blue a 1975 era 27-2 a few years back. They did the job twice in a row since the first time it came back it had blueing salts seeping out of the barrel pin area. The second job came back looking good and I stored it in the safe very well oiled.
Pulling it out a few weeks back I...
thanks for the replies. This is the feedback I needed. Since I would like to shoot the gun from time to time, I do need to get the end-shake addressed. Sounds like re-finishing would take away more in value than it would add in beauty. Currently it has honest wear and looks well used, which...
