New 627PC and a few questions..

So here is my new 627PC, newer version with a lock. I like it a lot and have been wanting one for years.

My quesstion is, how many rounds will S&W fire to test one of these? It comes with one spent casing, but the cylinder has 4 spots that were obviously fired from(every other spot). Does S&W clean up the gun any after firing it? It just seems to be kind of dirty from these 4 shots and was just curious.

Also, the trigger has a few small scrape/rub marks that seem to be pretty common(on the side without the lock), but they are in a place that would have to be from installation because it isn't an area that is touched when the trigger is pulled. Anyone else notice this with new smiths?

I am working from a small sample (One), but my new S&W was fired from all five chambers at S&W and was not cleaned prior to shipment.

My PC 500 also had marks on the trigger, but mine were from a grinder. The trigger stop was ground down so far that it never touches the frame, and in the process, the grinder also hit the back and side of the trigger.

No quality inspection at S&W on my gun, as both the function and the appearance were obviously incorrect.

It is at S&W now....I hope they will make it better.

Congrats on the purchase of a nice 627. I own two of the 5 inch versions and owbed a 3 inch version. All three were excellent shooters. Currently the factory does not clean after test firing.

Thanks for the replies. Also, is it normal for the rear adjustable sight to have "play" in it, as in it will kind of wobble if the gun is shaken. You can almost hear it wobble, but it doesn't move much at all. It's like the little blade is a little lose but it's not coming off or anything. I think this is normal, but not sure.

Yes - your sight blade will wiggle a little. Only one case is required to be sent with the gun but it may be fired every other chamber or every chamber - depends if additional tuning / adjustment is required before it is deemed ready to go. And no, they dont clean the guns.

I checked with my pusher several times a week after ordering one when they were announced nearly a year ago. I bought the first one they got - 4/10 - and it was perfect, except for the grips. Like yours in the picture, they didn't close up completely behind the trigger guard. Grip tag with S&W yielded a second - and identical, down to the same gap, pair. The Eagle boot grips met the '99 gripframe edge radii - and fit my '96 vintage 625-6 MG perfectly. Modern N-frame grips will retro to the '96 - '99 gripframes, but not vice versa. Still, I loved the revolver - and fitted it with my spare N-frame grips - perfect, of course.

It's autumn - I sold an old friend - and bought a second PC627 UDR 10/10 - again, without looking at the grip fit. Another gap - I sent them back - and, voila, a set that fit! Sadly, I then found out I hated the small size of the grip - and on with more 'extra' grips - a perfect fit, of course. Both revolvers were the two most perfect new S&W's I've ever bought, which was appropriate - they are the only new PC guns I've ever bought.

Considering other, and larger, grips was easy once I faced the simple fact that at nearly 2.5 lb, the PC627 UDR is not a great candidate for a CCW. I keep my 642 with OEM boots for that. It is a lot of fun as a plinker - and a great protector, in the home or Jeep. I shoot +P .38 Special +P's and my wimpy .357M homebrews as an upper end; .38 Special plinkers as a mainstay. Even though both have very good DA triggers, no ftf's have been noted with any primers. It's nice to be able to shoot my stash of older ammo in mixed primers again, too - my 627 Pro is sensitive - Federal primed ammo only - after it's change to lighter Wolff springs. In fairness, it's DA pull is lighter.

While I love the moonclips, and Ranch Products' version is great,they are tempermental, fit-wise. Starline and Remington brass fits most easily. The 5 Star Firearms speedloaders are great - just keep the OAL of the eight rounds per load similar. I wish I could find a decent holster!

Thanks for the good info. I have heard about the grips not fitting really good and kinda expected it. I think I am going to try to get a set of Spegels made for it. Might as well do it right!

Very nice. I have mine in 10 day jail right now. I purchased a set of combats that I am going to install when it gets out. The eagles that come with it are just way to small for my hand and the combats fit like a dream.

All eight of my cylinders were fired. And my rear sight wiggles too. I like that you have the same front sight as I do. There seems to be two types of those being used. My trigger and hammer both had some nicks.

My Eagle grips fit fine on my recent-production 627; however, the gun looked like it had been rattling around in a tool drawer for a while -- so I sent it back to S&W and they refinished it on their dime.

It's a GREAT shooter with Ahrends Retro Combats; I'm probably going to install my pair of Nill-Griffe Combat grips for the next range session.

I have one and love it, but it was blood, sweat and tears getting all the issues sorted. Glad to hear others had better luck. Some nice looking samples.

First one I bought went back to Davdison's for replacement under their guarantee. Too many issues to list. The second gun they sent I kept, but had to send it back to S&W twice in a row to get the issues sorted.

It is a sweet shooter now, but took a LOT to get there. S&W replaced the cylinder, yoke, hand and cylinder stop. The barrel was over-torqued and had to be re-aligned and the front sight centered properly.

I own a lot of Smith & Wesson products and a trip back to the factory is a very common situation. The good news is that it only costs time and they always make it right.

If I ever find a 627 UDR locally where I can fully inspect it first, I would buy it in a heart beat. Being hard to find and sourcing off the Internet is always a crap shoot.

I am dreadfully sorry for the condition in which some of the PC627 UDR's were received by my forum friends. I had the opportunity to pre-fondle my examples before my store purchase. Sadly, both the first in 4/10 and the second in 10/10 came with gap-bearing Eagle grips. Everyone they got was like that - but my glee over finding a 'Blood Work' gun at an affordable price blinded me. Gluttony took over for the second purchase, enabled by the sale of an old 'friend'. Actually, I wanted the 327NG - as a home guard - but it wouldn't take moonclips. The second PC627 UDR was literally a few dollars more - a no-brainer. They tie for near perfection, QC-wise - save those Eagle grips.

Well, I finally played S&W/FEDEX Ground tag correctly - and got a properly fitting set of OEM Eagle boots. One day at the range and off they came - back on with the rounded non-fg Ahrends cocobolo - great! The other one still had the Ahrends cocobolo retro targets - great, if a bit large - and my 4" 629 missed them. I ordered the PC Shop N-frame grips, #414170000 ($50 + s/t + s/h). They arrived yesterday... WOW!

When you get your PC627 UDR 'right', consider those grips to 'dress it up' properly - and comfortably. Even my wife, who hates checkering, likes them - her only complaint being her finers were a bit small for the fg's. Can't please everyone.

I ended up rePlacing the eagle grips on mine with a set of factory combat grips. This gun should have came this way. The eagles are way to small.

I took my Eagles off this week and put some round butt combats on it I found laying around, just like yours, not so pretty though. Fired some .38s through it and it felt fine. Have not been able to shoot .357's yet. I don't usually like the combat grips that much, but they are better than the Eagles.
