What do you call the round metal piece on the inside of a S&W revolver medallion wood stock that keeps the piece from rotating on the grip? I have a J-frame that is missing one. Is there a source for replacements?
I use the Hearthco clips with Starline 38 Short Colt brass in USPSA revolver division in a 686. The rounds stay ridgedly straight, but still have enogh side to side play to rotate. It makes the reloads easier. I was using some thinner clips before from TK Custom that worked with...
For USPSA , sx on the belt and one in the gun is the minimum at a club match. I carry eight moon-clips on the belt using a North Mountain holder and one in the gun. I have never run out and I have shot a few major matches.
KAC,
Good point. Blued cylinders are carbon steel. I bought one and run it on my 686 competition gun, looks sharp, it is blued and carbon steel. Some of the black coated cylinders on newer revolvers, like the Night Guards, are stainless.
If you buy a new replacement cylinder assembly from Brownell's or another supplier it will not be a simple drop in operation. The ratchet will need to be fitted. You do that with a file slowly on each lug of the ratchet. You could also use the existing and fitted extractor which would most...
We've talking about this a bit in another section. Nice photo of a Bowen 686 conversion there. Wish as much as we want, I don't think Smith and Wesson will make us one...
I do understand corrosion on bare steel, blued steel or even stainless, but didn't expect the coating on the airweights to be penetrated in quite this way. I've learned. Here is a picture of my 642 for everyone's viewing pleasure.

MadBadger,
It's guns like that mountain barreled 686 in 41 Special the won't let me drop it. I love it. Who did the work on it?
A few posters here understand. My 686s in 357 mag will do what ever I need them to do. Need and want are different things.
But an N-frame doesn't really scratch that...
BIG D,
I do view it the same way you do, a tool. I was a little surprised at how quickly the bizarre etching happened. It will be something I keep and eye on. I am using wood grips now.

I use one of two sets of Ahrends grips on a 2 1/2 inch 686. Smooth round combats or a little longer retro banana grip. Both are rounded and with a holster that holds the revolver close to the body it does not print under a reasonable loose t-shirt or other untucked button-front shirt.

It has been really hot recently if you haven't noticed. I noticed the grip screw on my airweight j-frame was getting some rust, so I took it out and removed the rubber grip. Under the grip the was wormy pattern in the finish. I cleaned the gun and oiled it, but the wormy corrosion is permanent...
Papajohn428,
Don't think I haven't thought about the 696, that was my obsession before I found out about the 41 Special. Almost as good as 44 Special, but six shots instead of five. If you find them they are under $1000, but... still hard to come by.
Let's say the conversion is priced similar...
