I believe I finally concluded it was a finish by Birdsong a non OEM for S&W. Birdsong's work is highly regarded; however, that was not what I was looking for and therefore did not bid.

Quick question. I just bought two pair of Pachmayr Gripper Grips for a new 29 classic and a new 586 classic both are square butts. The grip for the 29 fits fine; however, the grip for the 586 the hammer spring is in the way and blocks the grip screw.

I appreciate everyone's response. If I can't find a reasonable priced -7 or -9 I will probably try to find a current classic 25. I really wanted a 4 or 5" barrel rather than a 6.5" but I am sure I will still enjoy shooting it.
Wondering how the reputation of 25-5s are in 45LC for accuracy. I have read quite a bit about -7 and -9s as being accurate but don't recall anything about -5s.
Love to squirrel hunt. I have used a Ruger Bisley single action 22 as well as my Smith 41. They are both fun but I prefer the Ruger. Next time I go I think I will try my Smith 617 4". You can use anything if you have patience. Just pick what you like shooting at the range.
I just recently bought a 29 4" and a 586 6" classic. They are really nice revolvers. Around 2007 there were a number of classics that where 3" and some special Lew Horton's. I believe I bought 5 different ones various calibers and models but all N frames.
