TFA should be a 1990 production year pistol. When you call S&W about the recall, ask nicely and they'll tell you the year it was shipped from the factory. ;)
I've loved all the 3rd Gen pistols I've owned over the years. I don't have a 5906, but I do own a 5926 and, though I normally carry a Sig P226, I still carry it when I'm feeling nostalgic. It's a great pistol and one I'm not ever going to sell which is saying a lot for me! :)
Yes. Absolutely. Actually, except for a few rare exceptions like the new Series 70 Colt 1911 models and a few others, you'd be hard pressed to find any pistols made in the past 30 years or so that are not safe to carry with a loaded chamber.
The P226 has been my EDC for the last several years. It's my absolute favorite pistol model and is my go to for carry, training, and instructing (I'm an NRA-certified LE firearms instructor). My wife's pistol is a P229.
