My old heavy duty recliner is shot (after about 12 years of constant use), and I can't find a heavy duty replacement anywhere locally or on the net that isn't a power chair.

These new "big and tall" recliners are built like **** and weigh about 1/4 of what the old one did. The whole mechanism was shot on the new one after a month of use. They took the standard mechanism and just stuck it under a bigger seat.

Anything out there with a 500lbs + weight capacity that isn't a power chair? I may be fat, but it hasn't crippled me yet.

I think you are out of luck. I went through two recliners in 12 years, including a nice leather Barcalounger, and I only weigh 250. There must be some high-end manufacturers who make something sturdy, for a price, but you aren't going to go to your local HOM or Ashley store and find anything but complete junk.

I am only 200 pounds, but I have had my Lazyboy recliner for 14 years now, use it daily and it has held up beautifully and still looks brand new. It is not specifically built or called a "large man's chair" but it is what I would consider large. The mechanism is quite durable and has never given me any problems. If you have a Lazyboy dealer in your area it might be worth a look see.

+1. I've been sitting in mine since 1996 and it still works great and still looks good too. I'm around 300 lbs. All of our chairs and couch are Lazyboy.

I'll not drop that kind of money on a chair without any coverage, besides the lazyboy dealer is the same ones that screwed (and continues to screw) me on the "1 month special".

I used to get a "big john" recliner about evry 3-4 years, and they were comfortable and not too expensive, but I haven't seen them advertised lately. I had a couple lift chairs, but they were junk. While I watch for something, I have settled on large heavily built desk/office chairs. I use a foot rest with them. They are OK, but certainly no replacement for a recliner. I would appreciate all suggestions as well. Everyone should have at least one comfortable place to sit. Flapjack.

I've had some good luck with "Flex-Steel" recliners. My first lasted about 20 yrs. and I'm now about 5 years into my second. I'm about 230 lbs.
teesur.

I appreciate people trying to help, but I am asking about a chair rated 500+. I was 320 and was sort-of ripped at that weight in high school. I have since put on more than a little muscle and a whole lot more fat just to keep from looking too intimidating ;)

I'll not waste my time and money on another "big guy chair" that is rated for less than 500lbs.

In 2004 I bought a La-Z-Boy reclining couch. I weighed about 200 pounds and I presently weigh about 155 pounds. The foam padding in the cushions has been pure junk, having failed to retain any shape but that of my rear end after only about a year of use.

I use the couch because (a) its paid for, and (b) it's red leather and matches my man cave's Buckeye color scheme, but if/when I wish to replace it, La-Z-Boy won't be on the list. Problem is, I'll have to do a lot of research to find out what else is available.

Try looking at a Brylane catalog I think they carry everything you could ask for in extra fluffy

I just looked up Best furniture that Vic suggested, and they have a recliner called "the Beast" that looks interesting. At least the name would fit our decor! It is rated at 400#, and I am 6'4" and a little north of 350, with about a 64 inch chest, so it might work for us. The problem I have with these things is the langth. A lot of them are wide-and wider than I need, but both ends end up hanging out in the air, especially the foot rest, which usually ends up catching me about mid calf, but these are supposed to be 83 inches long when opened up. I will call them when I get time-no price listed (???) Flapjack.

they say over 400lbs. The picture suggests an adult male African Lion, and they average over 400 lbs.....

$800 isn't too bad

but I think I'll have to find it somewhere else that offers different fabric options to appease the little lady.

I'll have to look into this one some more. It looks very similar to the "good one" I had

I saw it; more lightweight junk with no warantee coverage. Sure, better than some, but definitely nothing like the old standard
