The wife and I went hiking here in Virginia the other day, Caledon Natural Area State Park, near where Route 301 crosses into Maryland, near King George, Va. Nice park, lots of trails, we had the place to ourselves and hiked eight miles.
On the way home, not far from King George on Route 301, we are stopped at a traffic light, the wife looks to the right and say's "Look, a Gun Shop!" Of course we had to stop and check them out, Big Dog Outfitters.
A nice gun shop, lots of pistols and AR-15's, stacks of ammo (cases and cases of 7.62 X 39, 7.62 X 52 Russian, 9mm and .40 caliber, all priced very reasonably at around .40 cents per round). No .22 ammo though. I did spy a Ruger SR22 pistol in the case, priced reasonably as well. Went home and thought about it for a couple of days.....
Went back and bought it yesterday, and took it to the range today. I was very impressed with it, it's light weight (17 ounces), compact with a 3 1/2 inch barrel, two ten round magazines provided. It has a de-cocking mechanism, you can load and de-cock the pistol to carry, first round is double action, subsequent rounds single action. Nice adjustable sights, comes with a bigger grip frame if you have big hands. Trigger pull is crisp and smooth in single action fire, a little long and heavy on double action.
I spent a very pleasant hour with it at the range this morning, putting every known brand of ammo through it with no malfunctions whatsover. Standard Velocity target rounds, Remington Thunderbolts, Federal Bulk ammo, CCI Mini Mags, Fedral Auto-Match, over 200 rounds, all ran with out a hitch. Sights required no adjustment, they were dead on from the factory.
A sample target, 20 rounds at 15 yards, fired with a standing, two hand hold. Weather: cold and windy:
This pistol would make a good deep concealement carry piece, or a good choice when light weight is of concern, such as back packing.
Ruger has put a lot of neat products on the market lately, guns that are thoughtfully concieved and work well.
The marketing guys know what they are doing as well, I bought a Ruger 10/22 "Takedown" rifle a few months back, and the zipper case it comes with has two exterior pouches, when you buy the rifle the pouches are filled with cardboard cutouts of Ruger BX-25 magazines and an SR22 pistol, "Your Ruger BX-25 magazines will fit in this pouch, and your Ruger SR22 pistol will fit in this one". The marketing ploy worked, my Ruger 10/22 Takedown rifle now has two BX-25 magazines and an SR22 pistol to accompany it!
