22 Target Pistol Recommendations

Being a trained athlete, and getting your pulse beat close to 40bpm,
gives you about 1.5 seconds between bumps.
It's like an eternity on target, for smallbore rifle.

Or, you could just pick up some bradycardia along the way...:)

Most runners do have what laymen would call Bradycardia. If the medical personnel understand you are a runner, they do not get upset with 40-45 BPM.

I never was a high level competitive shooter, but for the Wednesday night old geezer beer and bragging rights I shoot a 1938 Iver Johnson Supershot. The adjustable sight is a bit fiddly and the trigger could be better, but it will print neat and tidy groups with CMP bulk standard velocity ammo.

There is a certain perverse pleasure that comes from posting a score that's about middle of the pack yet beats some serious high level iron shooting 2 bucks a pop ammo.

MkII bull barrel. 30 years with it, no idea how many rounds. After 5,000 I quit counting. Rarely have to disassemble, I just clean the bore and the bolt face, soak the surfaces inside with CLP and wipe everything off. Try to use copper plated ammo, otherwise nothing special. Occasional box of Eley just to keep myself honest.

For modern banging and plinking, I bought a TX22 last year and put a Lakeline barrel in it. Slaps steel out to where I can still hold the sights on target, soon a 1,000 rounds through it, and only three or four feed failures, all magazine related. Zero failures to fire.

I very much like my Ruger all steel MKIV target. The trigger did stink but the easy to do and reasonably priced Volquartzen kit squared it away nicely. And yes, disassembly is a simple push button affair. I'm sure the MKIIs are nice but I can't imagine them being any nicer than the MKIV with the kit. I've had a MKIII and I never had any major issues with assembly but heck, the push button takedown is a nice feature.

Edit to add: I didn't use the Volquartzen trigger bar as I liked the looks of the OEM bar better. The kit works great. I wouldn't want the trigger any lighter.

Made the perimeter cut with old laminated blue and white dyed veneers, when I first bought the MKIV, some years ago.
Finally had time to start with the blue wood to figure out the inletting, that fits in between the slide stop etc etc, and then make the whites.
Not sure how I'll shape them, but these are like the OEMs in
width, and 1/16" thicker.
Will be okay for now.
Red might be nice.
The Colt medallions.....for range fun,
Yes, It's a Delta Ruger in .3937 :D

Indoor pic in poor lighting.
Will post a pic when completed.
For Bullseye, I might make a variation of this, the master, for making others, for my K22M long barrel and other Smiths.

This is the shape of the right half of the blue grip above,
rear view. Was white prior to being painted blue.
Fits my hand for a high hold on revolvers.
Strong hand can't slip down.
Left side has thumb rest.

If you're looking to stay on the less expensive end of the line, stay away from the S&W M&P 22 Compact. I bought one for the wife to plink with and it would NOT eject a single round. I had to manually rack the action for all 100 rounds I put through it. On top of that, the rear sight blew off within the first 15 rounds. I took it back and bought a Sig P322 (if allowed in your state). That is a sweet pistol. I also liked the Glock 44. All in the same price range of $380.00 to $409.00.

I am 78, financially challenged most of my life, consequently finding my own solutions. As a boy my dad let me shoot his pre WWII Colt Woodsman Target Pistol. As an adult, I purchased a clean used Ruger MKI, as I had heard good things about them.. I was not satisfied with IT. I came across a used H&R model 999 sportsman In excellent mechanical condition It was made in 1941, & would hold 9 .22 LR rounds.
It is the most accurate 22 pistol I've ever fired, a tack driver with fine sights. I am completely satisfied with it.
A few years ago, I picked up a 1950's used one, someone had shortened to a 2" barrel, compact grips, + a fiber optic front sight. I was surprised to find that IT is also extremely accurate. Both are Magic in my hands. I'm sure my solution is not what everyone else is talking about here - but sometimes old technology is hard to beat - for which I'm very grateful.

I have a Ruger Mk II. I put the Volquartzen trigger/sear kit in it. The trigger breaks , after the slack is taken up, without any prior movement. It’s crisp. It just goes. Weight of pull is right at 2 pounds. I couldn’t ask for a better trigger.

I don’t know about the higher end Brownings, but my Buck Mark standards are very accurate. But the triggers are mushy. Very accurate, tho. I have a scope on the 5.5 inch. It’ll put 10 shots just under an inch at 25 yards from a good sandbag rest.

But the King of the Hill…… the Beat em all Best, is still the Model 41.

What’s it mean to “sling shot” something? I’m not familiar with that term.
I believe that "sling shot" refers to inserting a loaded magazine into the pistol with the slide locked back, then pulling and releasing the the slide to put a round into the chamber. Pretty common practice for when you shoot your gun dry and the slide is locked back by the empty magazine.

I am looking for a 22 cal target pistol suggestion beyond the Model 41 S&W. I don't want an old High Standard. Any comments on the Ruger 22/45?

Thanks

I've got a Ruger 22/45 but don't use it for target shooting.

Not sure how hi-end you want to go but my wife and I have each got our own set of Walther GSP target pistols for many years, about 40 years at least. Here's a link to the Walther site WALTHER Products- Walther Master Manufacture Pistols If the link doesn't work just search on Walther GSP. They have interchangeble actions for 22lr, 22 short (rare now}and 32S&W long (wadcutter), one frame, three calibers. These are Olympic caliber pistols. In addition to International Pistol Shooting we used them for NRA Bullseye, for 22lr and CF using the interchangable action/barrels . I have a second Walther pistol that is called a Walther OSP which is basically the same gun but in 22 short for international rapid fire. While the 22 short action fits the Walther GSP frame, the OSP version comes with a unique grip more suited for Olympic Rapid Fire. The grips will also fit the GSP, but I don't like to change the grips from one pistol to another, hence the second pistol. Here's a link to the Walther OSP, or again just search for Walther OSP GUNS Magazine Walther OSP - GUNS Magazine . My most accurate .22lr Walther Pistol is a model FP. The test target it came with, which I still have, shows a 10 shot group, at 50 meters, into less than 1/2 inch. No, I'm not that good but the pistol still is! I do not want optics. I am going to change the front sight to green Hi-VIS factory height elevation.
Open iron sights are fine for me. Old school

Have fun with that new IV.
I was trying to find out about the Pardini optics.
Just curious.

I'll bench the IV with the scope on 8x, 50' and 25yds indoor,
then outdoors at 50/100yds.
Finding the best ammo along the way.
After it will use the RMR, offhand for a little fun, then the irons with Green florescent, most often.
The old long barrel K22M, is just irons now, Green front, and
both guns will most often, be together at the range.
The wood grips on the 460, are now on the 22 Smith,
and are what I call, two hand Bullseye grips.
Getting some two star pearl inlays. Rear Admiral Upper. :D
