New Flavor Spam & Chips

I remember reading about the popularity and status Spam had in South Korea in some obscure food blog and wondered why....but at the risk of stating the obvious,If you look at some of the cultures where Spam has gained almost cult status, one thing is common.... A large American Military or/and Naval presence, either past or present.
Hawaii,The Philippines,South Korea,Trinidad,Panama all love the Spam can.

A favorite in Korea is Siamese cat flavor.

when i was in korea, 62, i kept asking what kind of BEEF soup i was eating, w/ the language barrier, a women barked at me. after the women barked at me, i ate no more meat soup in the villages. saw only 1 cat the 13 months there. heard it was a treat. never saw SPAM.

I love pan fried Spam. With scrambled eggs or in a breakfast sandwich. Gonna have one tomorrow morning. I don't think I've tried any flavors except original and low sodium.

I have a can of Japanese Spam from my Sister-in-law living in Okinawa.

Aloha,

It's Official.

The Wife, who is From Minnesota Likes it.

Told me when we dated, "We don't eat Spam where I'm From."

Now she Loves it.

We had it for dinner Thursday night.

I thought the flavor was a bit too mild. But OK.

Will be doing a Spam run later today since it is still on SALE for $1.59 a can.

Will be added to my hoard of Emergency Hurricane/Tsunami supplies.

Had the jalapeno spam this morning, pretty good, if they can put it together with the bacon spam I could go broke buying that stuff!!

I love spam musubi. I don't buy spam here as it's fairly expensive at 3 dollars a can if not more sometimes. I used to live in Hawaii though and loved having it with eggs and noodles and many other things.

Get over to the nearest Asian Grocery, usually lots of flavors and sometimes 1/2 the price of your standard Supermarket.I also stock up on my boyhood favorite, Libby's corned beef and Palm corned beef from Australia.
Excellent choices for your emergency pantry or quick meals for the road or going fishing.

A Korean friend told me that they often fry Spam with kimchi. I love both separately, but I don't know about that. I think the smell while it was cooking would suggest a veterinary dysentery ward...

Aloha,

For the record, the Wife and I do Not use a rice cooker.

Since it's only 2 of us and me being the primary rice eater, we have gone hi-tech.

We use Shirakiku Brand 1 minute, microwave rice.

We get it from Sam's Club locally.

Easy clean up.

I'm surprised this thread has gone this far.

Never thought there are so many of you who've been to Hawaii and like Spam.

After the Vienna Sausage thread I decided to try some Spam again. Just turble!! However the spreadable stuff made into a sandwich was tolerable.

We have a local grocery that sells freight damaged and close out items. I got a can of "Garlic Spam" made for export to Korea . There was no English at all on the label except "Garlic Spam".

My wife said it was too strong a garlic flavor I thought it was great. But they were dead serious when they said GARLIC!

I love Spam! Most all the flavors. But it's hard to improve on the original. They got it right the first time!

This thread proves people will eat just about anything. I am planning to take cotton balls and rub some wild pig fat into the cotton balls, can it, and sell it as "Almost Meat". I figure anyone that will eat spam will love it.

I've been eating Spam for a looong time.

Here's a little tidbit that you probably didn't know.
When we were fighting in the island campaigns during WWII, we ran into a lot of natives that had had little or no contact with whites. Some were headhunters, some cannibals, and some both. In order to ally them with us, and protect downed pilots and stray servicemen, we had to stop the anti-social native behavior.

Guess what worked? That's right boys and girls, SPAM!!! Turns out, it tastes the closest to **GASP** human flesh!!! As long as we kept the Spam flowing, our folks were safe.

Try not to think about that.

Love the original, but haven't tried any of the mutations. Fried Spam with eggs is not that different from ham and eggs--it's made from pork shoulder (see "picnic ham").

Just a plain fried Spam sandwich with Mister Mustard or Zatarain Creole Mustard and a good kosher-style half-dill pickle is a fine lunch for me.

I remember walking home from school for lunch and mom would fry some spam and I'd have a spam and mustard sandwich. Memories!

Tonight for supper I had spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, sausage and spam. The Vikings in the background singing made the mood perfect.

I don't eat Spam, When I was In Viet Nam in 1968 My unit was detached for the main base and we had to purchase our own food from a commissary in Saigon. We would send our mess request to the commissary. One month all the meat we got was 20 5lb tins of chopped ham in natural juices or What you gentlemen call SPAM. I ate spam every day 3 times a day for 35 days, I have eaten it fried, baked, broiled, boiled, grilled, glazed. It tasted like Spam. I got so tired of it I would eat the C-rations of lima beans; those lima bean were thrown in a box or given to mama-san. Now I like sardines, smoked oysters, Vienna sausages, and potted meat.

Forty sum odd years ago,
