build a hollow point

I've used a drill some and had good results.
Used to make my own HP loads for 7.62x39
and also have used it to open up some 158 gr.
swc .357 loads for game. Just try and make sure
you are as close to center as possible when drilling
and hope i don't need to tell you this but.....
drill the bullets "before" you load them into the cases.

There is an element of risk when opening the tip of FMJ rifle bullets. They have been known to shed the jacket in the bore, where it is a problem for the next round. Factory SPs or HPs have the jacket covering the base of the bullet to avoid that possibility.

Not true in my experience. What can you point out that gives proof to this claim? Opinions are just that, unless backed up by documented events.

Not in my experience either. My department switched from R-P RNL standard velocity to W-W High Speed 158gr SWC back before the +P designation came into use. We had good results and I personally heard no complaints.

Why did law enforcement move away from using these types of bullets? It's because SWC bullets were no better than LRN and FMJ bullets. It's because they ALL showed excessive penetration when used against human attackers and criminals that needed to be shot. If SWC bullets worked so great at stopping perps LE agencies would have NEVER switched to JHP ammo and NYPD would still be issuing the SWC ammo instead of the 135GDHP+P. Once again, the SWC bullet is no better than LRN, FMJ and even JSP when it comes to real shootings in the real world. They ALL exhibit excessive penetration in human beings and even in ballistic gel. That is REALITY.

If you think SWC doesn't work any better than LRN, then you haven't used them in the field.

NYPD hit the assailant 17% of the time. 83% of their shots miss entirely. Worrying about a bullet that has given up much of its energy in going through is ridiculous.

Wrong argument. We're not discussing missed shots. That's a totally different subject.

You are worried about the wrong thing. And your fix for the wrong thing can lead to failure in your prime purpose: stop the bad guy. Penetration is good; it is necessary; it is what a gun does.

SWC Are A Poor Stopper & GDHP Are Superior.

I have to agree with CTG_COLLECTOR.
From everything that I have read, the SWC acts like a LRN when it hits a man. Which would give it about a 2/3 chance of a One-Shot-Stop.
I ain't saying don't use them, but keep it in mind, you may shoot right through an attacker.
I would say that NYPD did a very smart thing, in issuing GDHP, an excellent stopper.:)
