Short Barrel Shotgun

I should add - that I decided a Shotgun would be overly destructive to fire in MY house (unless a crowd of invaders).
So - I've opted for my more controllable, 30 round, 9mm, Braced Stribog - with strong green laser - Not to wreck the place.
I doubt homeowners insurance covers owner caused damage.

It has been more than a decade since I last attended a civilian based class regarding the use of lethal force, but at that time about 2012 the average cost of a self defense shooting was in the neighborhood of 250K on a very clean shooting. I had a relative who shot and killed someone in self defense with a .38 Special after being shot four times with a 30-30 Winchester. The family gave up every nickel they had to keep him out of prison. That was...early 90's.

If you shoot a man, the least of your worries is blood stains, spackle, ruined furnishings or decor.

It is my considered opinion that the only legitimate rule #4 concerns involve sentient beings. All else is expendable.

I REALLY hope nobody ever breaks into my house, but if they did the last thing I'd be concerned about would be a hole in a wall.

Criminal defense isn't cheap, nor is defending a 'wrongful death' or personal injury lawsuit.

It's nearly always better not to shoot people.

They're $89.99 right now on the CDNN website, but those are NOT Remington OEM barrels ... they're aftermarket barrels, made in CHINA.

CDNN also has these entire guns right now. Just saying, for something to throw in the truck and work 100%.

That semi auto look very inviting, despite the 20 inch. I have a pump gun I carried in police work that is 19.5, pretty handy.

I still have the first shotgun my parents gave me when I was 14 - it is a Stevens 311 in 16 gauge. A few years ago I took up quail hunting and I bought an extra set of barrels off eBay. Took a while to fit them and I cut it to 21" - made a handy gun and my buds made fun of it - until I killed 49 quail with 49 shots that year ;)

Riposte
Yes, and hunting doves with those short side by sides is a hoot. People think they will not shoot very far. However, it only takes one pellet to the head for quail and doves, I have had people in shock at the distance those things work. And it you think about it, the pattern is huge. Of course they can fly through it, but just as many do not.

Actually, a 22 inch side by side makes a pretty good overall hunting gun. Unless you are after duck and pheasant maybe. Even then they are just the same on the rise, 0-40 yards. Seems to me.

My short 20 is a 311.

My first shotgun. Bought this 1200 with a 'Riot' barrel back in the late 80s. It's worn 18" and 28" barrels, now lives with this 13". In NZ we don't have a minimum barrel length, just a minimum OAL of 762mm. It's dispached a bunch of critters and has spent a few hours rattling around as a truck gun. That receiver anodizing is tough. Used to wear a red dot and I play with putting a ghost ring on, just because.

A friend's agency did some research and came up with 14" 870s, patterned and issued individually. They barrel lengthwise chosen in part because the curve of function and access in a patrol car crossed at that point. They also have ARs in the cars. After a controversial event my friend was issued a short AR, I think with a can and a happy switch.

I have to put in my two cents in regard shotgun sights. Shotguns are NOT hand-grenades!! They must be aimed, except at virtually contact distance, in order to be assured a hit of your target. Let's try this. Many of the shotguns being shown here are intended for home defense. Fine. Great tool for the job. What is the maximum distance you think you'll ever use your home defense shotgun? Trick question, what's the longest unobstructed distance between any two points in your home will provide the answer. Bet you a large cup of coffee and a donut it's gonna be under 30 feet.

I'll wait. Get out the tape measure and go find out now.

OK, here are some targets I used to determine the spread of an open choke Ithaca 37, 5', 10', 7 yds/21', 10 yds/30':

Bottom line; ya gotta aim the darn weapon if you hope to hit anything.

When using the shotgun, focus on your front sight or front bead. Control your trigger. The pellets will go where the gun is aimed, not where you hope they will go!

Mr. Rosenthal, I'm old and senile, but I'm certain I recall your byline in some of the gun mags? Am I misremembering? Thanks, DVC

I bought a Remington Tac 13 "Firearm". With the shockwave style stock It was......fun. Easy to keep a can rolling from the hip, pretty much shot where you wanted it too. Pretty much. The problems arose when trying to shoot it from eye level. A guaranteed bop in the nose. Never did hit a thrown clay pigeon with it. Admittedly didn't try very much. (See above).
I stamped and engraved it, then bought a stock set on the bay of e. A set of clamp on turkey sights completed the ensemble. Really turned it into a different gun, Slugs touching a 25 yards, quick handling, short enough to maneuver in a vehicle.
If I were to do it over again I would cut down and thread for chokes a used Remington 1100 or 11-87. Much more aftermarket or used part availability after the demise of Remington as we knew it. And the recoil spring in the receiver of the Tac 13 is not necessary if one keeps a full or nearly full size stock on it.

Tac 13 - I like the look of the rib.

No paperwork. They must be less dangerous than an SBS 😂

I went the same route 👍

I purchased my tac 14 back in 17' its our bedroom closet last defense in case of a bad scenario.
I added the arm brace stabilizer, a sling, also a light, one round extension tube magazine, and a GG&G magazine tube follower.
I liked the tac 14 so much, I just had to have a tac 13.
The tac 13 is still unfired in the box, since purchasing it a few years ago, I hear the tac 13 is a soft shooter with the design of the gas system.
I have all of the same goodies to accessorize just like the tac14

I also like the rib on the tac13 👍

This old Stevens 16ga take down model with factory 20" tube. Stamped P and Cyl.Bore. Has been on house duty for decades. Starting out in my grandparent's house after WWII. Then it moved to an uncle's house in the 70s. When he had a nasty divorced mid 90s it went to live with my dad. Then when dad passed it came home with me. p1210001.jpg_thumbnail1-3480340999.jpg

I talked a lot with Jim Cirillo at IPSC matches in the 80's about his time on the stakeout unit. As a young cop I ate it up and he said that 10-12" M-1 carbines were popular also.

Jim's passing in 2007 is the absolute definition of irony ... a man who survived 18 separate shoot-outs as a founding member of the NYPD's elite "Stakeout Unit", only to be killed in a traffic accident at the age of 76. That's more gunfights than Wild West legends Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and "Wild Bill" Hickok combined!

RIP, Jim.

20 gauge shockwave I form 1'ed
Reduced lop youth stock set.
Sent the barrel to Steve Rose and he threaded for Mossberg chokes.
Shoots great, handles great. Perfect little companion.

Very nice!!!
Have you ever patterned it w/ varying chokes?
Reason I ask...
I have patterned a couple short bbl jobs (18+ inch) and choke seems to have less effect than with long barrelled guns. Maybe due to higher pressure behind the shot column when leaving the bbl? I've not shot enough to really be definitive, but wondering...
Anyway, very neat and handy gun!
(PS: I do remember reading in Swearingen's Worlds Fighting Shotguns that military testing demonstrated a positive effect of Modified on short barrelled guns and I have one so factory choked, and it does.)

Those are neat old Browning designed guns. I remember them from gunshop clerking days back in 91.
Inquiring minds want to know! What load's it stoked with?

So are several hundred thousand Norinco AK's, SKS's and 1911's were also made in China and they all command premium prices.

You DO know that if you buy a Mossberg 500 or Winchester 1300 Defender today brand new, that they are mostly MADE IN TURKEY, correct?

When OP's gun was made, the Chevy Vega and Cavalier were brand new cars at the time. Guess where they were made? And they literally rusted on the showroom floor.

Country of origin means much less than it did in the 1950's..All that means is that this barrel is priced at $80 because the overseas workers were paid slave wages to make it...CDNN has reportedly sold over 10,000 of these barrels alone..

Well, that barrel is no Norinco AK...

As far as the Mossberg 500 goes, while it's true that the Winchester 1300 "Defender" is currently manufactured in Turkey, the Mossberg 500's made right here in the good ol' USA ... in either Eagle Pass, TX and/or North Haven, CT.

Happy with the Mossberg 88 with a Magpul stock adjusted to 12 3/4 LOP for house use. I fitted the Defender Tactical cartridge adapter and can fit nearly a dozen shorty shells loaded with buck. Inexpensive, but I wouldn't call it cheap. IMG_0321.jpeg
