I thought I would bring your attention to something new and disturbing that happened to me recently when shipping a gun. I always want to ship a gun legally, which means NOT by USPS (although I know some people still do use them). So I dropped off my pistol at my FFL so they could ship to the buyer's FFL. They logged in the gun and finished wrapping the box I gave them along with padding to protect the pistol which was inside the original box, and a couple days later their UPS guy picked it up along with several other boxes going out by UPS that day. The FFL's CCTV shows all the boxes going out and my box was recognizable because it was an Optics Planet box. But the driver did not scan the label in the store, nor in his truck. I was told this is fairly common that they just drop everything off at the distribution center where it all gets scanned there.

HOWEVER, the label never got scanned and the box has gone missing. My FFL also had 2 other boxes in that same day's shipment arrive to the correct destination except they were EMPTY on arrival! (they were not guns but other merchandise). So now 3 weeks after the ship date there is still no sign of the box or gun and UPS has no idea as to what happened to it. My FFL has had to file a claim for insurance to UPS, as well as a police report and ATF report on the missing pistol. My FFL has reimbursed me for the gun and of course, my buyer is disappointed that he won't get the gun he had wanted. The buyer is not out any money because he didn't pay me, having never received the gun.

So someone inside the distribution center (or the driver) has their eye out for items from FFLs so they can be stolen before they get scanned and tracked. I know that UPS laid off 12,000 workers last year and perhaps they have a lot of disgruntled employees left over now. If UPS can't be trusted, and FedEx is too costly, then our options for legally shipping guns to FFLs or private parties is now severely compromised.

Therefore a lesson from this is to somehow personally watch the item get scanned at UPS and/or use FedEx, or dare I say use USPS, and face the consequences.

Be careful out there, gentlemen.

I recently bought a magazine, bipod and sights for a AR. Not the first time from that vendor. Their shipping label always says "**** Gun Shop".

It came across country in 3 days, landing at my city's UPS depot. From there it seems to having been "lost".

They require a 8-10 day waiting period for them to try to locate it. At 15 days I filed a guarantee claim with the vendor. They re-shipped in a couple of days.

I don't trust UPS. I asked for USPS when they shipped the first time, but they did not honor my request.

Over and over I keep saying that if the vendor MUST use UPS I will buy elsewhere. One of these days I'm going to keep my promise.

I remember way back in the late '60s when UPS was first starting out. They were hiring high-school kids like no tomorrow. The same kids talked about how "others" were stealing UPS blind and wearing nice watches they had taken from packages. UPS theft is nothing new.

I've had issues with UPS before, but with ammo.

After I initiated an investigation and complaints (both with selling company and UPS), the ammo turned up right quick...

LE needs to pay more attention to these schemes as does UPS!

You don't say when "recently" was. but hopefully it will turn up. You know the old saying, never assign to malice that which can be more easily assigned to human mistakes (I don't like to use stupid when there's no way of knowing :) ).

I agree with Truckman. Optics planet indicates something of value.
Was the package insured? Since I don't trust any shipper I now pay to insure at high value. It does add a little to shipping cost.

UPS started in 1903 or 1906,

edited to add. My mistake, 1907 according to their website, in Seattle, Washington.

UPS has not have a tracking number for a package sent to my daughter for 5 days now. Said "Invade tracking number"
All kinds of jewelry, rings, ear rings and such.
Who knows what happened to the package.
Worth some money, but that's not the point........

I've lost several valuable shipments to UPS including theft of a$600.00 fountain pen, and destruction of a 500BPE side by side English double gun.

They've also lost more mundane items.

I don't like UPS.

Shipping anything from a gun store or a package marked with anything about guns, seems like it would be like waving your thing in a brothel. You get what you're asking for.

Here's the point...Dealt with UPS back in the early 70s. Ship most anything and they got it delivered. Then they started losing items especially guns...so they changed the rules...we have to ship next day air...insure the hell out of everything...guns are supposed to get special treatment with the bosses accepting the guns. Here we are now with inflated shipping costs and No special care in shipping guns. Way back when they knew who stole stuff...especially guns,,,they do today...but except in extreme cases nothing happens to the...shall I say perps? BATF does not get involved...the police don't get called the employees stealing don't go to jail or even lose their jobs...oh and if you file a claim for loss especially a firearm...there is NO WAY to track a gun in next day air?? I say Bull. You can't stop all crime...I know that but make SOMEONE responsible...and if lost or stolen...pay the insurance without a 3,4 or 5 month "delay" looking for the"package"...And USPS needs to follow rules too...don't file an insurance claim with them!

My FFL uses USPS and I don't think he has had any problems with loss but a couple of damage claims. I think he has had loss problems with other shippers.

This problem should fall at the feet of the driver (and FFL). He did not scan it into system. This is part of the tracking info u can access to see where your package is. I'm guessing he was just taking shortcuts and not trying to steal something. But the results are the same. Overworked people take shortcuts. It's not a problem until it's a problem

I had a frame shipped USPS FFL to FFL. Tracking showed they delivered it. Not at the FFL. Dealer checked with USPS, nothing in the system. Suggested he contact BATFE. One phone call from them-even though they didn't have to do it-motivated a USPS supervisor to check the mail truck. There it was! Delivered within 30 minutes of "discovery".

Yup, I just lost one to FedEx ground. Driver filed a false report of delivery and signed the business name. Thing is, the receiving FFL has full camera coverage of the front of his property, and NO FedEx came that day. Because I am "not a licensee", I will have to eat the gun. CLaim denied.

Nothing new... I worked for UPS back in the 1970s while going to college and the thefts going on back then were "criminal".

The dealer I use no longer uses FedEx or UPS and ships everything USPS Priority Mail... ZERO problems compared to the other two..

Rifles and shotguns were getting broken all the time and even though the "declared value" was "X" try getting your money out of them... With USPS you pay for insurance, the gun gets damaged and they pay up...

The reason that UPS and FedEx went to, now demand, OVERNIGHT or TWO-DAY shipping for handguns at very high rates is because of the theft problem...apparently it hasn't gotten any better...

I sent a long gun just this Wednesday to LA. Tracking shows that, at least the box :p, is arriving today. Not too bad…so far.

Aren't FedEx Ground separate from FedEx? More like a "route franchise", that can be purchased and operated independently? If that is still the case, look into having that driver arrested for the firearm theft. He/she can't work if they are locked up.

Maybe possible that "Not Scanning" contributed to the package getting kicked to the side until someone in distribution site does scan it and gets it back in the loop.
Scan device not working that day ?
I recall certain packaging issues such as reflective tape over labels etc.. can delay info input into system until read by a human..

Hopefully your package surfaces and all work out.

Some of you may have read my thread late last year on chasing a "lost - never delivered" case of 9mm from SGAmmo. I finally recieved it after it mysteriously turned up at the main hub, returned to Oklahoma, then shipped to my home instead of the UPS store. Turns out the manager was not scanning in anything with a white hazmat sticker - he's just refuse it and send it back. Driver who delivered to my home said company policy is all packages are scanned in at the sender, and scanned delivered when the driver hands it off to the recipient. Yeah, right.
