Is there anyway to report abuse of handicap placards? Not license plates but those plastic things that hang off the inside mirror.

I know someone who is clearly misusing them....in fact I don't believe for a minute there is any legitimate reason for this person to have them..... and I see it every day and it drives me absolutely insane.

I tried Googling this and all I can find is the PA DMV topics on how to apply

From an Iowa hanging placard, quotes applicable Iowa Code 321L , may result in fine, invalidation of placard, or revocation of the right to use the placard.
The placard says Iowa DOT, gives address and phone number in the state capital.
So the presumption is that you would call your state DMV, or DOT. Local DMV office may have the exact number to call.

You should report it, but only if you're absolutely sure about the individual. I, myself, have one of those hangers issued by my doctor. If you were to see me just standing around, you might think I was faking it & did not need a placard. But, if I were walking, once you saw me lurching along you'd realize that I needed the placard. I hate it when I see someone parking in one of the disabled slots springing out of the car & trotting into the store! They're obviously driving a vehicle that belongs to someone else & taking advantage of the situation. Like a lot of people here, I have good days & bad days. On a good day, I'll park in a regular slot & hope that someone that is having a bad day gets the spot.

I see it all the time and it frustrates me too. Far too often I see someone pull into a handicap parking space, throw that little handicap sign on the rear view mirror, and proceed to hop out of the vehicle and walk into the store as good or better than me. Could be that some of them have an intermittent handicap but maybe not. I do think these handicap placards are far too easy to get.

On the other hand, I truly admire folks with a legitimate handicap that go on about their daily lives and don't let their disability get the best of them. These people are heroes in my mind.

I cannot say that I honestly 100% know that it's fake but seeing this person almost every day I don't see an issue. This person has no problem carrying many bags while balancing a cell phone between the head and shoulders and walking. All digits and appendages are accounted for, there is no lurching or limping or walking with the help of a cane. No stopping to catch breath. Walks around the office no problem, always wears fashionable shoes that are not good for posture or legs or back and I never once heard a complaint of something hurting. Of course I do not see this person every moment of every day but in 15 years I've never seen anything to indicate the need for handicap placards. Maybe it's was a temp issue after surgery or something but with all evidence I see there isn't justification to have it now.

I'll add that this person is very ...."woo is me" ...type with a healthy dose of everyone owes me. kinda like it's too hard to carry all my Gucci shopping bags that far...wish I could park closer. The car is not borrowed

Aloha,

One way to help make sure the correct person is using the placard,

is to put the disabled person's photo on it.

That's what we did in Honolulu when the City was issuing them.

We also put a photo on the ID card.

Made it easier for LE who can issue citation for misuse.

Forgot to mention. I asked a reletive why this person has a handicap placard and the answer was "I have no idea"

I had a idiot BIL that used the car his mother was driven around in. He took full advantage of the mirror hang and used it all the time for his own use.

I saw the car in a handicapped spot one day and then saw a LEO Sergent friend of mine patrolling the lot and gave him the story. He at my request did not take the tag(as my MIL really needed it) but made it undeniably clear what problems would occur unless his mother was in the car as he was putting this in his officers briefings

I was present a year later at the house when she died and unbeknown to anyone I went out in the garage and took the hang tag out of the car.

I like the idea of calling the DMV. Surely the people who issue the handicapped signs are interested in preventing their abuse.

My wife has MS and a hang tag. Some days are better than others. On the bad days she uses the tag and usually a crutch or cane. On the good days, she parks in regular spots. As much as it upsets us all to see this abuse, I doubt it is a priority for LE or the folks who issue the tag. I don't have a good answer to the OP other than to repeatedly report the violation to see if there is anyone official who cares and can do something.

I absolutely agree. Please, remember not all cases are apparent. Heart disease is deceiving. Not everyone suffers the same way. Just something to think about before fronting someone. I have a man who works for me who is missing a leg and you would never know it, but believe me, he suffers, for real. NEVER whines!

Well if you live in the "Land of Handicapped Plates and Hangers"
Not just all the folks that live here but those from out of State.
Most Box stores have so many parking spots reserved it is difficult to get a spot close.

it is one of those things that you become numb to.

Fl has tried to crack down on the old 200 ft rule, and requires renewal every year. But it seems many can find a Dr to just issue one.
There are so many here and just by looking at the folks you truly wonder??

Here is the application to get one.

I think most of them are #8 LEGALLY BLIND:eek:;)

Be sure of you FACTS before reporting someone, the hanger should have a ID #

Had a friend at work who ran the small cafeteria. He could joke about being "visually impaired" he would say hell no I am blind!

Anyway he laughed about getting a free lifetime Fishing AND HUNTING license!!:D

Why be so judgemental? To judge by virtue of simple observation will only lead to an assumption. Now if you want to, confront the person and validate or invalidate your suspicions by the response or lack of response then go for it. But to assume based on observation is simply premature....so now you want to profile based on whether a person acts, walks, talks or looks disabled.......leave it be.

Just because you don't see the issue does not mean it's not real. Mine is very real but you can't tell the pain from looking.

I suggest you mind your own business.
Excuse me for asking. And I can tell you there is no pain. Working in the same office with this person for 15 years. The only time there is pain is when they can't take a month vacation. And as I said....I asked the S.I.L who said he has no idea why they have the plaque.

Well... I don't have a placard but I'm pretty sure I could get one if I wanted to. I have chemo induced peripheral neuropathy. You would never know. Even a short walk makes my feet go numb & tingly. It can be painful.

Lots of people have bad knees, bad feet, bad lungs... a long list of stuff you can't see.

Make damn sure. Or better yet don't worry about it & go on with your life...

I applied for a placard one time but "tourette syndrome" doesn't qualify.

I don't think that handicap abuse is high on the list for law enforcement and I don't think they would appreciate vigilantes doing it for them.

You might get some satisfaction from a place of business if you were handicapped and couldn't find a spot because of some lowlife grabbing the spot but otherwise just move on.These abusers will never change. We should be lucky if that's the worst thing they do.
