IWO JIMA

I have something in common with "26 Mar. 1945,that would be 26 Mar.1968"twenty three years to the date, I graduated from boot camp MCRD SD Calif.Semper Fi.

The 26 th of Mar is also significant to me as on that day in 1964, I took a bus ride to Albuquerque, NM to be sworn into the U.S. Navy and a plane ride to NRTC, San Diego.

We barely see even Pearl Harbor day mentioned in the news anymore. When I was a kid, it was front page news every year. Young folks will eventually never know of these dates, or the significance of the events that make these dates so important to folks of our, and our parents generations.

Best Regards, Les

That was well before my time but is not beyond my comprehension. Allot of amazingly brave men died that day to keep america (and the world) free. What an incredible debt we owe to all those who fought and sacrificed in WWII!

p.s. I hope this kind of history is still taught in schools so that those come behind us, understand the cost of freedom.

My dad's cousin Marvin landed with the 5th Marines on Iwo Jima but like most who saw heavy combat never spoke of it. In fact if my Dad hadn't told me, the only thing I ever knew about his service was him complaining about sharp pains in his arm when I was a kid in the mid 60's and hearing him later say "the docs pulled some damn Jap shrapnel out". After they had both retired and were wintering in Florida, Dad also related a story about how they had gone to lunch with some other couples and one of the other gents started telling war stories. A look came over Marvin, he stood up and sternly said " I fought that war once, I'm not fighting it again", and promptly left.

I saw no mention on any news cast nor in the local paper, makes one wonder whether or not we as a people have lost our way.

I believe they are hell-bent on purposely neglecting our history to shove there opinions down our throats. When I can remember? ill tell of an incident I had with an author who was at Barnes and nobles years ago--who was an "authority" on all happenings on the Eastern Front. I shot holes through his presentation.

He was also "neglecting" some info about the Battle of the Bulge. His stuff was nothing but bilge.

If you had seen it on the news,in the words of President Trump,it would classify as Fake News.:D :D

Hope this aint considered political? but, this morning I denied a friend some Cheetos because the Don couldnt spare any of ashley judds favorite shampoo--Cheeto Dust.

Most don't--unless it gets in their way to get piercings and to skateboard everywhere.

Unbelievably brutal conflict. In 15 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan we've lost less than 5,000 men. In 36 days on Iwo Jima we lost 6,800 Marines.

I hope we never see war like that again.

Double that number to civilian contractors killed there as well. That figure came from Mark "Oz" Geist during his speech here last year. He was also one of those Benghazi survivors almost had his left arm blown off during that ignored attack.

Hand salute...

A hearty hand salute to those who gave their lives on Iwo, and to those who lived to tell about it.

This is a picture of the Marine Corps Memorial in DC that I took in September, 2015, while serving as a guardian to a WWII vet who traveled there on an Honor Flight. As most probably know, it replicates the flag raising on Mount Suribachi. It's very impressive, as was the feat it portrays.

You don't see the Battle of Gettysburg mentioned in the news anymore either, yet my kids swear I was there.... :p

Got an Iwo Jima statue in Harlingen next to the tech college I attended. I loved sitting by it on Saturdays and or Sundays. Across the road is a USMC boys school of some kind. Us with cars--used to pack the cars with students needing a ride into town. Right next to the memorial-is a Stuart light tank.

I think this is the sigh outside the USMC boys academy??

Flag-raiser Harlon Block was from Harlingen and I think he's buried there?

I remember exactly where I was (changing a flat tire on a gimpy little road heading back to Harlingen) when I heard one of the last Flag-raisers had died. At that time, that man either lived or was visiting his son--who lived near Harlingen.
