Ruger 454 casull Alaskan

Our son bought his when he was stationed at
Kodiak Alaska. I set him up with a Desantis holster and ammo pouch.
He carried it when fishing in bear country, basically the entire island. Thr gun is a tank and the .454 is harsh but .45 Colt id like a .38 in a smaller frame handgun. Great gun.

A friend has one: I loaded him up some powder puff .45 Colts with Trail Boss so he wouldn't hate life.

I've no doubt that a .454 Casull out of even one of these snubs is a veritable freight train . . . but I don't go near any animals that wouldn't be adequately penetrated by a 255-grain .45 bullet at 900 fps (and no one has ever said 9mm ball underpenetrates - and I can shoot a lot of it on target fast). Since the Casull is so difficult to control in rapid fire from one of these little cannons, I personally stick with other guns - but the Alaskan is undeniably neater than heck! I've struggled not to buy one, even though I probably wouldn't ever need it. That's a really neat gun, mbliss57 - thanks for the cool thread! :D

The 460ES/500ES, makes fluting the cylinder of my M460 Carry a recurring thought.
Range time eludes but ..... mañana with TrailBoss, 4227 and 255g Leads at 25yds indoors.

Might try putting the Trijicon RMR and 2.5x8 Leupold on for lofting light loads at distance.

Still hope to run into an Alaskan but budget for another longer 460 ... no comp.... at some point.

I had a Ruger Alaskan in .44 magnum- used it for long solo hiking trips off the trail system to hidden lakes and such.

Stopped carrying it. It was WAY too heavy for only six shots, and the thought of touching a round off without ear protection made me consider that I might prefer to take my mauling like a man and still have some hearing left.

I would buy it.

Would make a fantastic home companion or car gun loaded with deer grenades.

Deer grenades would be more than controllable in the big Redhawk and the stopping power would be unbeatable.

Thank you to a well known forum member for the awesome alligator paddle holster.. ( he can identify if he chooses)
Its nice when someones artistic work that was meant to happen years ago meets it original intent. This paddle holster was custom made for a Ruger Alaskan but the sale never happened. Well this week it did. Enjoy[emoji41]

Nice gun, and a real nice watch also.... :)

Great looking holster! I'm thinking those rounds pictured could slide through the barrel unfired! Those aren't bear busting .454s!!!

Good heavens. A 454 for everyday carry? And here I am with a 9mm.

Pretty much any 9mm cartridge is adequate for self-defense against humans, but some folks live out in the country where four-legged predators roam who can take a lot more punishment, ergo they opt to carry something more.

Case in point, the Ruger Redhawk Alaskan is thusly named due to the fact that polar bears are a very real threat to out there, and most folks won't carry anything less that a 10mm with full house loads because they're more concerned with four-legged predators who could literally eat them for breakfast than emaciated meth-heads who just want the contents of their wallet.

So yeah, unless you're living somewhere in which you're more likely to be attacked by vicious predatory animals than human beings, you're just fine carrying a 9mm.

This is not a CCW. . 38 specials ,45 ACP , 9 mm and 357 magnum are all calibers I use for SD/CCW.
I just took that photo as a Bar-B -Q gun pic. Aka just for fun ..

To the other post ...Those are 454 Casull cartridges with it.

I have a XDM 10mm. 15+1. Maybe the pros consider 10 a little light for Brown or Polar bears?

I consider it too heavy for gangstas.
