Who does not Love a .45 Caliber Hand Cannon from S&W?

.454 Casull and .460 S&W Magnum I have no use for or need for them. But the .45 Long Colt I do. This is my shootable and fun 45LC S&W...

The real deal flying ashtray, and looks like an excellent pistol and load. Saved a bunch of these for 45 ar and 45LC. Just because

I've never fired a .44 Magnum. I have fired a .45-70 revolver, So I have the .45 revolver covered. .22, .357 Magnum and .45ACP have been close friends of mine, with the ACP coming out of bottom feeders. With that said, at the moment, my handgun calibers are .22, .38SPL and 9MM with multiples of each. I'm on the search for a .357. But I don't feel any more or less American than the next guy because of what I have or haven't shot.

I'm more American because of my overall awesomeness!:D

Previous to this M25-7

I had a M25-5 and was not impressed. The commercial cast bullets I could buy were all 0.452" and the M25-5 had 0.455 inch chamber mouths. It would not cluster at 25 yards and the barrel leaded. I traded the M25-5 and another pistol for this M25-7 after pushing a 0.452 jacketed bullet through the cylinder and finding very little wobble in the chamber mouths. Later, when I called S&W, the customer service rep told me that this limited edition was the first production that had the smaller chamber mouths, what was made previous was 0.455"

Since then I have found commercial cast 250/255 LRN in 0.454" and wish I had kept the M25-5 as 0.454" bullets shoot very well in 45 LC's with the bigger chamber mouths.

This might be of interest, a factory target from 1989, group fired offhand with my M25-7.

The M25-7 with its longer and heavier barrel is nicer to shoot, both are very accurate with my favorite load of a 250/255 LRN or LSWC and 8.5 grains Unique. This load is accurate, powerful, and easy on the pistol. I see no reason to try to push the 250 near 1000 fps in these lightweight N frame pistols. I have done that in limited quantities with 2400.

Sending lead downrange at about .452" diameter has come a long way since Colt's 1860.

Don't you mean since Colt's 1847 Walker.;)

Of course we are just talking revolvers here. Because sending lead downrange from an handgun at .452 diameter, and much bigger for that matter, started way earlier.:D

I like S&W and I like guns that make .45 Caliber holes. I have the following from Big Blue.

Model 25-5 8"
Model 25-3 6" 125th Anniversary Edition
US Army Model 1917
Model 625-5

And let's not forget their excellent automatics.

Plus a a whole gaggle of Ruger Vaqueros in .45 Colt and even one in .45 ACP. Also have a Colt New Service in .45 Colt.

I enjoyed shooting my Colt 1917 in .45 ACP so much I picked up a model 25 no dash and a pre model 26 both in .45 ACP. I just had Hip replacement surgery and its been expensive! These two, a mint 15-2 snub, and three Colts!!

I wouldn't call it a novelty gun. A novelty gun, to me, is something along the lines of a Desert Eagle, NAA mini revolvers, etc., firearms that are more conversation pieces than practical lead throwing devices. As mentioned above, I'd say the gun in the original post would probably make a decent guide gun, that is carried for emergency use and rarely shot, however, there are lighter weight options available.

Definitely not my thing, and I suspect S&W can make more money producing something for a wider audience, but I'm always happy to see a US company still producing a quality revolver!

S&W PERFORMANCE CENTER MODEL 460XVR 3.5"

It can shoot .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull and .460 S&W Magnum! COOL! Weighs 59.5 oz., unloaded. What is not to LOVE?

I’ve never known anyone with the shorty barrel on the 460 or 500 to like shooting it. They say it’s too punishing in the hand. Even my bigger 6.5” barrel 500 took some getting used to for me but most people I let shoot it say “no way”. Good luck

I have absolutely no use for an X-Frame, other than I don’t have one in my collection. But I just can’t justify the price.

The price on used was getting down prior to CRB.

I’d like to have one of the 500’s in about a 7” barrel, but it looks like that will now have to wait.

I traded into one of those X framr 460s quite a few years back. It was like a little...3" bbl. Non-ported backpacker model. It was a kitty cat to shoot, but it was a bearcat to carry. I sent it on it's way and have never been unsatisfied with my mere and humble 625 Mountain Gun in 45 Colt.

I had a similar experience with my .45colt Colt Anaconda with cylinder throats being too large but .454 bullets made it dead on. I like the Model 25 family of revolvers and have a few. Also have a Thunder Ranch. Would love one in .45colt but I do have a 1917 rebated to 45colt. All good shooters. No need for a cannon.

These are what 45 caliber handguns should look like. The only one missing is my S&W 1917.

I think that big 460 XVR S&W is great! If you can shoot 45LC, 454C, and 460S&W you have lots of versatility. You can use it for most game on this continent as well as mild defense loads. Sounds pretty smart to me.
