Shotgun Shooters, I hate ported barrels.

I was never a fan of porting. I always thought the factory ports on some of the Mossberg shotguns was more of a marketing gimmick than anything actually effective.

I have two ported shotguns, Browning BT99+, and Browning Citori Special Sporting Clays. Factory ported, and are strictly for the Clay bird fields. When you shoot 100-200 rounds a day, sometimes 2-3 days in a row, the porting is greatly appreciated. It also reduces the muzzle rise for quick follow up shots.

I have to disagree with you. In my opinion Porting for a Sporting Shotgun is nothing but a marketing gimmick. Because those ports don't do anything unless there is enough pressure to generate enough enough velocity in the ejected gasses. And a 1200 fps Target load isn't going to generate enough pressure, for that you need to be shooting a 3 1/2 inch Magnum.

BTW I have two 12 gauge shotguns that I once used for 4 gun Skeet. A Browning Citori Sporting Clays Lightning and a Beretta 686 with a 682 Adjustable comb stock. The Browning is Ported and the Beretta is not. I have compared the two guns side by side on multiple occasions and the Browning does not reduce muzzle flip at all. ZIP, Nada, Nothing.

I have a Mossberg 590 with the Vang treatment. It is loud and obnoxious to the side and sure to make enemies on a range, but it is not a toy. It is for fighting, and everything on it is set up that way. This is true of most of my guns. Their first purpose was as a duty weapon and now for personal defense.

I have had the opportunity to shoot a nice double at a skeet range. I couldn't hit a thing. Darned barrels were too long. I don't like anything over 18" and if I was still a cop would have a 14" 12 gauge and an 11.5" AR with a suppressor.

I have a ported shotgun. Frankly, I can't tell that the porting does anything. If making the purchase decision again, I'd go portless.

A friend had a Browning 325. It was beautiful and shot well.
It had a 28 or 30" barrel with screw in chokes and was made to skeet and Sporting Clays.

The gun handed fast and secure and I once tried full and extra full chokes in it and shot trap with it.

To me, it was the perfect shotgun in feel, fit, shooting and recoil.

The only down side was that all of them were factory ported. I hate the blast and extra noise that it gives the shooter. That's the only reason I never got one. In talking to Browning, the porting was standard and wouldn't be deleted even on special order.
