Greetings!

Will a Beretta 92/M9 magazine fit any variant of the 92, or are they variant specific?

I am looking at a 92X, and wondering about magazines which I would want to purchase as I found them at acceptable prices.

As always, thanks in advance for your help!

This is just general info, but for Beretta mags, either go factory or MecGar. You can get 18 round full size flush fit mags from both, likely because MecGar makes them for Beretta. There are also 15 round, flush fit 92 compact magazines.

MecGar also makes a +2 extended base plate available seperately, or installed and shipped on an 18 to make a 20 round. There is also a special spring and follower that can go in these 18 or 20 round MecGar magazines, making them a flush 19, or an extended 21.

They have the same for their Sig P226 9mm magazines, which is why I know.

Greg Cote LLC is a great source.

^^^ IIRC, MDS makes Beretta magazines. MDS, Beretta,& MecGar are the way to go. The newer Checkmates are okay too (in my experience),although I use mine for Range mags.

In answer to OP's question, yes, any full size 92 magazine will work in any full size variant of the 92 (except as noted above). A magazine that works in a 92SF will work in the 92X. Compact magazines will not, of course, work in full size frames.

Also, I have had no issues swapping out M96 and M92 mags. The only difference I've found between the 40cal mags and the 9mm mags is possibly a heavier mag spring in the 40S&W mags.

It is to my understanding that any modern standard Baretta 92 magazine is compatible with any model of Beretta 92 (and by extension, clones like the Girsan Regard, but not the Taurus PT92 because it has a slightly different cutout for the magazine release) including older models with the heel magazine release.
However, magazines made specifically for particular models such as the M9A3 aren't backwards compatible because they lack the cutout for the heel magazine release.

I just did some digging, and MDS is actually a Beretta Holdings company, so they are a sister company to Beretta. Learn something every day! I love this place!

FYI. You can save wear and tear on your factory magazines by using military surplus mags when at the shooting range. I have brought mine a Gun Shows for $5.00 each. Even $10.00 is a bargain. I replace the magazine springs with Wolff Extra Power +10% springs as I have not idea what the history of the surplus mags are. They work great. In fact yesterday I went to the range and used them.
