PSA has bought the rights to the H&R name and has started producing Retro M16A1 rifles and carbines using the H&R military contract markings. We had a variety of CAR-15's in the Ranger Bn's in the 70's-80's including XM177's, GAU's and the Model 653's. I just picked up this PSA H&R Model 653 for old times sake. Here it is pictured with some of my old gear.

Psa has a great business model,
They bought out Nodak spud and the H&R name over a year ago but so far production of retro ARs have been way behind demand.
Seems like they have alot of lowers but the uppers are spotty.
Read a thread on AR15.com that production may soon ramp up but proof is in the pudding.
It is shocking how many cos are fighting to compete In the $500 M4forgery market but nobody has seriously realized that if the cease M4 production and introduce $500-$600 M16A1, A2 rifles they would make a killing.

I bought one of their retros a month ago. It closely models the Colt 604, which was essentially the XM16E1 without a forward assist. Apparently, the Air Force didn’t like the forward assist. Anyway, I’ve been very impressed with the rifle. The level of detail is outstanding. They’ve really gone a long way to make this an accurate clone, and it’s a good shooter too! Certainly the best factory produced repro I’ve come across.

I really want to pick one up… either complete or buy the halves.

1:12 or 1:7?

Anything you don’t like with it?

I haven’t had it long enough to really wring it out but I haven’t found anything not to like so far. Got about 250 rounds through it. It zeroed easily, finish quality is very good, the quality of the furniture is as good as a Colt M16A1 upper that I have, and I’ve had no malfunctions. This one is a 1/12 twist - I don’t figure I’ll ever shoot anything but 55 gr. ball in it. All in all, I’m delighted with it.

Thanks for posting this...even though it seems PSA/H&R are making them out of unobtainium and they immediately sell out.

I was just opining on the thread about Wyndham closing that they potentially could have extended their business if they'd have only concentrated on retro ARs.

With the legacy and age of this platform in US service, you'd think many might want to experience an original configured A1 or A2.

Guess I'll have to keep an eye on PSA for when back in stock.

Thanks for sharing your retros.

It blows my mind nobody is doing a proper M16A2 HBAR with all the veterans who used them from the 80s to early 00s.

I just ordered an H&R M16A1 “blem” lower from PSA.
A little pricey at $160 but it will be perfect with my Colt A1 20” upper.

Here is my "semi" retro AR-15A4 which resembles the M16A4 rifle, albeit without the quad rail. I started with a PSA AR-15A2 lower then bought the PSA 20" Freedom upper with a 1 in 7" twist, as well as a PSA premium nickel boron BCG and standard charging handle. The scope mount base and Primary Arms red dot sight were added to augment iron sights. The scope base allows me to to use the 300 meter zeroed A2 rear sight with large or small aperture and the red dot is sighted for 100 yards. This rifle shoots great and has never once malfunctioned. It likes the PMC or Federal 62 grain green tip ammo. I don't care what anybody says; PSA makes good stuff and this rifle cost me less than $800 dollars in 2017. Thanks for looking.
