5946 Anyone?

The internet really opens the access to all types of firearms and accessories, but I think the prices are catching-up to that reality as are the tax monkeys. It's not that much of a bargain unless a person finds something others missed, and after these past two decades of internet use, that's becoming less likely by the hour. They are out there, but a lot scarcer than they used to be. Some sales outfits get that and maybe toss-in a sale price or extra mags. But not all. It's a jungle out there!!

Deals can definitely still be found, just a few days before this thread was posted I picked up a 5946 + box and 3 mags for $299 and a 5904 for $285 shipped. Both from out of state from smaller vendors so no tax to pay and one visit/fee to my FFL for both of them. That's way easier for me than rummaging through pawn shops until I maybe find something and the FFL happens to be a neighbor.

My own two NYPD 5946's are in fabulous shape... The first one I'd rate at 95%. Probably took the free gun on his way out the door after 40 years or so on the Job....

Well, it wouldn't be a "free" gun, unless someone else bought it for him. Personal duty hadnguns are not "issued" in NYPD; they are bought and paid for by the MOS (Member Of Service) and individually owned. When you retire or separate, you paid for it, you own it. And it's generally rare for an MOS to be presented a gun upon retirement (as a gift), unless the retiree was well-liked, high-ranking, or a range instructor, AND there was some a**-kissing that needed to be done for future job prospects for the presentor...

I think any 3rd gen S&W auto in 9mm or .40S&W is going to start moving up in price just like the .45 ACP and 10mm guns. Most of the old department owned guns have been turned in and sold already. I've noticed the 915, 411, 410 and even the 910 moving up in price. Folks just want something different from their polymer framed striker fired guns to play with for change and the 3rd gen guns are works of art from a bygone age. Model 15-4ever is correct about NYPD guns. It's not issued, you buy from and approved list of pistols from an approved retailer, if I'm not mistaken. The thing that changed in New York is that even retired LE must procure a New York State pistol permit before they retire or loose the gun. Newark PD NJ is the agency my 3953 came from. I missed out on the California CHP 4006 guns. That would be a hobby unto itself, just collecting department marked guns! My department was switching from Gen 3 Glocks to Gen 4. I actually had the opportunity to purchase a duty gun from the outfit that handled the contract. Unfortunately they wanted way too much for the gun and wouldn't guarentee I would get my gun.

That's been wrong since 1995. We used to pay for our own guns and I paid for mine, but then some grant was passed and we only had to pay for the night sights. Those who paid for their guns before the grant were reimbursed. Lots of guys who still had their revolver at retirement would take the free gun and then sell it after they retired. The gun was yours to do with as you pleased. Keep it, gift it, or sell it. Your choice. When the cops paid for their guns, the Glock was chosen more because it was cheaper than the 5946 or SIG 226, but once they became free that evened out a bit.

That clarifies a lot of *my* confusion over the information. Some posts, mostly yours, had this information, but other times I'd see that NYPD officers paid for their own guns.

So, I'll just add to the confusion and ask if that also applied to off duty weapons?

No. Off duty weapons are strictly optional and must be paid for by Officer. Night sights in those are not mandatory. My duty gun did not have night sights since I paid for it. When I got reimbursed we weren't required to add the night sights.
