Hyve extended mag release in m&p 2.0 FS

Hey guys. I ordered a huge technologies extended magazine release for my m&p 2.0 4.25” and of course after ordering it and it shipping today, I read that you shouldn’t use a metal magazine release in a polymer frame. Is this true? I also read that people were having issues with the release hanging up. Has this been resolved? I’d rather err on the side of caution and not install it but I bought it to have an extended magazine release not for aesthetics.
 
While the OEM M&P mag releases are poly, there is a steel insert. This is the part that actually engages in the slot in the magazine. A known issue is when it's daily carried, sweat causes rusting of the steel insert and, combined with salt from the dried sweat, can "freeze" the release in the frame. The mag release spring is also steel. The "fix" is simply to include the mag release when you clean the sweat and grime off the pistol. If it's not carried, it's usually not a problem.

The HYVE ones are aluminum but also have a stainless steel pin to lock the mags. This should be more rust resistant.

This part won’t cause excess wear on the frame of the firearm though? That was mostly what I was concerned with along with the sticking issue which I guess has to do with the steel pin. Unless that was just early releases?
 
One of the actual issues with extended mag releases is their being activated when you don't want that to happen. Now then, if your piece is a game gun and the only downside to a dropped mag is points/time/pride, no problem.

BTW, dis-similar metals in a salt water (sweat) environment accelerate corrosion.
 
OP, why do you need one of those?

Just curious.

I myself never needed one in all the 1000's of rds I have fired.

Everyone at my club that used one took it right back out because they were hitting them inadvertently while firing.

This was really prevalent during competitions. Usually right in the middle of a stage.

I primarily shoot a VP9. I tried flipping the button to the right side but wasn’t really crazy about it. I don’t like breaking my grip and am hoping the extension gives me that extra little bit of reach. I read that the hyve is longer than stock but shorter than other extended.

I'm not aware of any issue with excess wear. I can't imagine how many mag releases it would take to wear the mag release "hole" enough to cause a malfunction.

I can't speak to all the M&P models, but the mag release button is essentially the same for the full/compact 1.0's and 2.0s, Shield 1.0 and 2.0. Consequently, they can all manifest this issue if not maintained properly.

IMO, I wouldn't worry about it.

So do you use your trigger finger to drop the mag? Broke a few bones in my right hand during my younger days and couldn't operate the release with my finger unless I broke my grip. Tried using my weak side thumb since it was right there and it just felt too awkward since all of my other guns (including my Walthers) have buttons.
 
Don't believe anything you read (hear) and only believe half of what you see ... was what my Daddy used to say !
What he meant was don't be shy about trying things for yourself ...
A lot of what you hear may not be right for you .
You have already bought it ... install it and see if you like it ...
It may be the best thing since ... sliced bread !

I have heard of no issues of metal extensions and plastic frames ,
that shouldn't be a problem .

I use my middle finger on my right hand to drop the mag. I don’t have to twist my hand at all or loosen my grip. I love the paddle releases.
