Congratulations Bald1 and welcome to WV! You mentioned you're 20 minutes from Lewisburg, not asking specifics but just curious what general direction?
I'm well north near the Bruceton Mills area, near the PA line, but travel down 219 through Lewisburg a few times a year. That area has been gaining interest which has driven prices of land up and it's going to continue to increase in value so good you bought now.

I bought my wooded property in 2000 and similar to what you're doing built a 1,700' home a couple years later. I hope you love rural living in WV as much as I do.

Saw an SUV window sticker that said something like "When you hear banjo music, paddle faster"

I had a guy help me with my driveway,,
This was his "bumper" sticker,,

IT IS A MINDSET,,,,,,,,,,,,,, AND WORTH LEARNING..

Bald1, I have friends who live in Lansing, West Virginia, not far at all from where you'll be. Every time I visit there, I'm struck by the peace and quiet...you go out on their deck with a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, and the only thing you hear is nature sounds. It's really nice...

I wish you a successful move, and a long and happy life in your new home... :)

I’m straight north on 219 out of Lewisburg about 10 min. Then 10 min up the mountain. If I remember correctly it’s 16 mi. The Greenbrier Valley as it’s know is pretty expensive and increasing daily. Lewisburg has been voted coolest and best small town in America. The Greenbrier Resort is 10 min away in White Sulpher. We feel fortunate to have found our place. It was listed with Whitetail Properties. Probably because the seller used it as a hunting property. The listing agent was not very attentive and property never made it to local MSL for whatever reason. My agent basically did all the work. She told me had it been correctly listed locally there would have been a bidding war within 48 hrs. I guess sometimes you just get lucky. The second day we looked at it my wife and I were standing on a logging road and she says “ we’re buying this right?”. I said well let’s think about it and go get something to eat. Her reply was “call Debbie and make offer. A real offer. Do not lowball and do not loose this property”. As usual I did what I was told. Although they rejected my first 2 offers.

SweetMK, no Teslas for us. But I have been experimenting with a rechargeable weed wacker the last couple yrs lol. You don’t see a lot of the Alaskan model trucks. What options does that include? I assume it’s more than a decal

OK I'm somewhat familiar with that area. Actually a neighbor friend has IIRC around 200 acres just north Lewisburg, out of Renick. He purchased it 25+ years ago and was going to build and move down there but decided not to. In fact talking with him a month or so back an adjoining property to his was going up for sale and their realtor asked him if he'd be willing to grant access to it through his property.

Yes Renick is the town right after mine heading north. My father grew up in Renick and I have several relatives in the town still. Wow, small world huh.

Congrats on your move, it will be a big step, but will be worth it. Wife and I got tired of the same **** in Oregon, and moved to western Montana a couple of years ago. We bought a new house, in a fairly rural subdivision on an acre and a half, I didn't want to deal with a bunch of property maintenance. As for the hunting part of it, I can jump in my Polaris buggy and be hunting in 10 minutes. Last week, I went out and got a good video of a bear along the roadside, and yesterday we saw some moose along the creek. It ain't WVa, but it's close enough to heaven for us.

Man, you are more than prepared.
Carry a small handgun everyday. Remote areas are not as safe as they used to be because of the meth-heads and drug cartels.

And if you're ever walking in the woods, and you hear banjos playing in the distance, turn around and go the other way!!

Congratulations on your escape from NY!

Bald1, congratulations on your purchase!! I know that area quite well, I was born about five miles south on route 219 in Ronceverte. My family has a similar size place in Monroe County, small town called Union. About 20 miles south on route 219. The land has been passed down from generation to generation since 1905.

It has been my lifelong dream to return there when I retire. I'm about two years away now. WV has a lot to offer to retirees, lower than average cost of living and very low property taxes. There are a few caveats however, generally a pretty good drive to "civilization" for goods and services. Emergency services are also further away and many areas have volunteer Fire Departments.

My biggest concern is quality health care, WV ranks dead last in the US. in that area. Greenbriar Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte does not have a very good reputation. I had some serious heart issues a few years back and have a pacemaker / defibrillator. I suppose I could return to the Cleveland Clinic twice a year for check ups. Small price to pay for living in paradise!!

Best regards, Bob.

Bob, Roncevert is where our Kroger is. The closing for this property was actually in Union at attorneys office. I did my part online remotely. Monroe County is every bit as beautiful as Greenbrier County. It just hasn’t been “discovered “ yet……. Speaking of Roncevert my first handgun came from there. I’d spend summers at my grandparents farm and talked my PawPaw into buying a Heritage Rough Ryder single action .22 at AIDES. I was probably 10 or 11. The gun stayed down there till I eventually got my NY permit and legally transferred it up here. I think it was about $30. I eventually got a 22 mag cylinder as well. There’s no amount of money that would buy it from me. I killed a bunch of crows in his cherry trees with that thing.
