Almost Heaven West Virginia

We have 97 acres in WV. Love spending time there. We take a lot of firearms with us for sighting in, target shooting and general fun when we go there. We have a man that cuts the grass around the old house and keeps an eye on it for us. We were talking to him the other day about our shooting and trespassers. We said we didn't want anyone getting hurt. He looked at us seriously for a moment and then got a small smile on his face and said: "When you boys are here, everyone stays clear of this property." So, be sure to enjoy target shooting and hunting. It will keep the riffraff away.

And if you're ever walking in the woods, and you hear banjos playing in the distance, turn around and go the other way!!

Congratulations on your escape from NY!

If I hear banjos someone has some explaining to do. I'm pretty protective of what's mine.

Yes , I've got a cabin on 7 acres and lease 95 acres of timberland across the road from a logging company. Being present is the best thing for discouraging trespassers. I don't tolerate it. I've had them ticketed when caught on trailcams……. That being said. People in WVa just seem different. They respect other people and they respect the land. At least that's been my experience. I'm glad to see WVa is a purple paint state. I will post the property but I don't want a bunch of obnoxious yellow signs all over the landscape. Most of the neighbors have very large tracts of land. They don't need to trespass on mine.

SweetMK, no Teslas for us. But I have been experimenting with a rechargeable weed wacker the last couple yrs lol. You don't see a lot of the Alaskan model trucks. What options does that include? I assume it's more than a decal

That thing is "snow plow loaded",,
everything a snow plow guy would want,,

It even has a 1 ton front end under it.

4.10 gears,, 4WD, of course,,
lots of exterior auxiliary lights

Spray in bed liner, rubber floor mats instead of carpet,,

AND other stuff that does not come to mind.

I do not plow snow,, I just like a heavy duty version of the truck.

This is my second "snowplow equipped" truck,,
My SIL still runs the 1999, 6.0 2500

Bob, Roncevert is where our Kroger is. The closing for this property was actually in Union at attorneys office. I did my part online remotely. Monroe County is every bit as beautiful as Greenbrier County. It just hasn't been "discovered " yet……. Speaking of Roncevert my first handgun came from there. I'd spend summers at my grandparents farm and talked my PawPaw into buying a Heritage Rough Ryder single action .22 at AIDES. I was probably 10 or 11. The gun stayed down there till I eventually got my NY permit and legally transferred it up here. I think it was about $30. I eventually got a 22 mag cylinder as well. There's no amount of money that would buy it from me. I killed a bunch of crows in his cherry trees with that thing.

Sounds like we have an awful lot in common. My parents moved to Cleveland in the mid 1960's because there was no work that paid well in WV. We would go back to visit my grandparents once a year or so. My brother and I would cry every time we had to leave.

A few years back one of the neighbors asked about buying an acre of land. My father and brother were there, I couldn't get the time off work. My father told my brother to call and ask me, as I am the oldest. My reply was "Not an acre, not an inch, not for any price." My brother said he didn't say a word, but had a big smile on his face.

Some things are worth more than money can buy. Within probably less than three miles I can visit the gravesites of my family dating back to the Civil War. I will live in a cardboard box with nothing before I sell that land.

Good Lord willing, maybe we can meet sometime in the near future.

Bob

You can see snow in the winter on your property, at that altitude. Three ski resorts just north of you will see it early and late in the year, and are great fun to go to. Well... they were for me before my knees got "arthrited".

Pasound, I've already seen the snow. From our future front yard we'll look across the valley at Cold Knob. Elevation about 4400'. Back in the early and mid 90s we'd set up deer camp there. 20x30 army tent with stove. We had an outhouse looking over hill with a gun rest and no door. Cause who knows when Mr Big will show up. I'm the guy at the back of Dodge dually with Woolrich pants. I was 26. First year I had to hunt without my dad.

Back in the mid-70's a few friends and myself spent New Years camping on top of Spruce Knob. Pretty much froze my *** off.

Close by is Dolly Sods - a seed of Canadian tundra flora and fauna left there since the ice age ended. Been there? Great place to walk in the spring. Flowers growing there are only in Canada and a few spots in upstate New York and adjoining far north New England.

My biggest concern is quality health care, WV ranks dead last in the US. in that area. Greenbriar Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte does not have a very good reputation. I had some serious heart issues a few years back and have a pacemaker / defibrillator. I suppose I could return to the Cleveland Clinic twice a year for check ups. Small price to pay for living in paradise!!

BRatliff, you need to check the medical in Charleston. CAMC has excellent heart care at their CAMC Memorial Hospital. Also check CAMC General. For checkups and such, you might look up what CAMC can do.

Health care has gone to hell in most of rural America, and because most of WV is rural, and there is no straight line from one place to another in the state, our statistics look very bad to the viewer. Most of that is because we are aging faster here than Florida, we're too sedentary, and it's too easy to slip into bad diets.

Bald1, not a hijack - hopefully needed info for all ex-pats wanting to return.

Welcome to WV. Glad you could make it. I don't know if you know but we have no tax on guns and ammo. I am up north of you outside Parkersburg. Sounds like you have the right equipment. Hard to go wrong with Kubota and F250.

Congratulations on your purchase. I didn't see a grocery store or medical facilities in your photos so I trust those things are a short drive away. You might want to position a few game cameras around your property to see what animals are going to and fro there.

...and trespassers. Congrats on your move. Beautiful country up there.

Colby, funny thing. The sellers nephew had 4 different feeders on property. He and the seller used it for hunting. It's been in their family forever. Feeders are not legal in NY (hard to believe I know). So I'll have to figure out how and where. There's tons of hickory, red and white oak as well as alfalfa fields around. I think they are well fed. When we were there in June the bucks had nice racks stated already.

I've got hickory on my little Mississippi farm. Don't cut the whole tree, just a few small green pieces to throw on top of your grill to enhance a BBQ. Smoke is good.

I have heard of it but I've never been there. I have read about it on Wiki. Some day I'll check that out as well a Spruce Knob. I believe Spruce is the tallest Mt in the state.

Draw up your house plan yet? I really enjoyed doing that and had a friend (who was a builder before retiring) help with the plan. Is there power nearby?

Not yet. We have an idea of what we want. And by we I mean my wife lol. "Contemporary Mountain Home" is what we'll call it. It will be on a hillside. These two pics are a general idea. Hoping to meet with 2 builders in September. I'm more excited about my shop (pole barn) than house . My wife says there's no way we're building a cookie cutter ranch house with vinyl siding in that location. I couldn't agree more. Also, yes power is at the road.
