Who else here has sometimes carried some pretty oddball guns? Maybe because it was all you had available at the time? Maybe because you really liked the gun? Or maybe the mood hit you and you figured—heck, why not?

By “oddball” I mean a pistol that your gun buddies would think was a bizarre choice for concealed carry. Cops might laugh.

By “carry,” I’m talking concealed carry in public, not something open carried at the deer camp or your back 40. I’m not talking about toting something odd one time for 15 minutes. Let’s talk about concealed carry of something odd for a full day, and doing that more than 3 or 4 days total.

Here’s my partial list.

—Dreyse 1907 in .32 ACP. I was given the gun, it was already rusty and battered, was relatively small. Bad. Very awkward shape, totally unreliable, 28 pound trigger pull.

—S&W Model 29 .44 Magnum with 6.5” barrel. All I had and was a dumb kid. A bit too big & heavy!

—French 1935A in 7,65 French Long. Laugh if you want, but this worked great. Very slim design, better grip design than even the Browning High-Power, light weight, safety doesn’t dig into your side, and already painted black so sweat won’t cause it to rust.

—French 1892 St. Etienne 8mm revolver. Surprisingly light, superb DA trigger pull, excellent sights. Just really like the gun.

—Swedish Nagant M 1887 in 7,65 Swedish. Also light and slim, with a better DA trigger than you would expect. Reloading would be far too slow.

—-SIG P210-6. Gun is superbly accurate and easy to shoot, so seemed worth a try. Too heavy, safety hard to manipulate at speed. Not something I would want the cops to impound.

—S&W K-38 with 6” barrel. This is easily the gun I shoot the best, SA or DA, under all circumstances. Since it is my “best shooter” I figured I’d try carrying it. It is actually not bad to carry, not too heavy. Sharp front sight will snag easily. If I ever got a holster figured out, I’d try it again.

—Remington 1858 replica, .44 black powder cap & ball. What I had available. Left grease stains in my waist band.

—Ruger Mark IV Bull barrel .22 target pistol with 5.5” barrel. What I had; shot it well.

I am dull. Boring. I carry the same thing all the time. Every day. It's not an oddball by any stretch. I want simple, reliable and "enough gun." My carry gun is a pedestrian Sig P365.

While I understand and share the fascination with oddball firearms, I prefer to carry something else. I'd love to shoot some of those oddballs in OP's post, but at the range.

Grease on the 1858 is totally unnecessary.
That grease over the balls thing got started by one or more amateurs in the 1950’s or 1960’s when people were having to figure out all over again (all the old timers from the 1800’s having died off) how to get good results with percussion revolvers. They got it wrong on the necessity of using the grease to prevent chain fires. It’s a practice that it’s really tough to talk people out of.

I am of the opinion that the first rule of carrying a gun is "carry a gun", so if you have one that is reliable, with which you have practiced, and are competent to use I wouldn't criticize your choice. One that doesn't work 100%, or is difficult to use, would be a bad choice unless it is all you have.

A Ruger Mk IV Target is a good choice because you'll probably hit your target, or scare them off. A .44 blackpowder revolver is also because you'll probably set your target on fire. ;)

I carried a 1922 Browning .32 ACP until I could get something better. 40 years later a Remington R51 after trial and error and new magazines finally got me to the 200 rounds without a failure that is my standard for semiautos. Then I won a Shield in a raffle and sold the R51.

My FILs normal CCW was an Artillery Luger in a GI shoulder holster. It was his war trophy and the only handgun he owned for years. When traveling as a salesman he carried daily under a sports coat.

A coworker in one department carried a 4" Luger off duty. At a different agency one guy carried a Radom and another a COP as ODGs.

A couple of times when I was the Town Marshal, I dressed up in old western garb for Halloween and strapped on my 2nd Gen Colt Single Action .357 but I backed it up with something a bit better in case something happened while so dressed.

Desert Eagle .50AE

Buddy owned one, stainless, was a range toy.

I jokingly said, why dont you cpl it?

He handed it to me and said if I could cpl it all day, he'd buy me dinner.

I loaded it up, stuck it in my belt, appendix carry, and said ok lets go.

We went around town to several gun shops, even took a walk thru some woods and a park.

Boy, that Taco Bell he had to buy me tasted so gooooood!
