Pocket Watches. Am I the only one?

My Hampden, railroad grade built in 1905. I carry this one everyday.

I have several more. The hardest thing about owning one is finding a watchmaker who can repair them!

Kevin
At one time, pre-quartz, even small towns had a few watch and clock repairmen. Not so easily found anywhere today. I lived near a big railroad town in my younger days, and there were at least a half-dozen jewelry stores that had watch repairmen. The railroad guys all carried pocket watches and they had to be inspected, cleaned, adjusted and sometimes repaired frequently.

Don't carry them but have a couple. One is a large heavy silver case with a heavy sterling silver links chain.
The other just recently bought because the maker and I share the same last name.

Avoiding buying a third because if you have 3 of something you become a collector. Too many collections now.

I am looking for a decent pocket watch to wear when I am working.

Jim,

Decide if you want an old mechanical watch or a new quartz type.

Mechanical watches are often referred to as 30 hour watches because that is about how long they accurately run on one winding so they need to be wound daily. Winding is accomplished in one of two ways, key wound (with a separate key) or stem wound. I have both, no big advantage one or the other in my opinion.

Accuracy is determined by how they were built and how they have been kept and maintained. Clean and well maintained will run better than and old, dusty, dry watch. A railroad grade watch is built to a higher standard than a “Dollar watch”.

Common brands are Waltham, Elgin, Hamden, Illinois, Hamilton, Howard, Ball and many other lessor known makers.

Hunter case or open face?

Gold or silver?

Roman or Arabic numerals?

Heck, there are almost as many questions as when thinking about a new revolver!

Good luck!

Kevin

I carried my Hamilton 992b for many years until the cell phone era made it superfluous. Last serviced at the Washington St. Watch and Clock shop in San Francisco (a place you didn't want to be "on the hour") and runs well every time I wind it up and carry it. These old gems are hard to kill.

I got my 992B cheap from someone who didn't understand "lever set". It came with a silver plated 3 piece case that I replaced with a stainless case. I have it serviced by Mark Sirianni in PA but haven't worn it much since I got an Apple Watch.

These are the two pocket watches that I own. The one on the left says Remington but I bought it at walmart. I have no idea if it's any connection to the Remington firearms company. But it's 25 years old and it still works. I think I only paid $20 for it.

The second one is the same Timex Expedition picture above. I bought it off eBay as a retirement gift for myself. I guess I didn't really think that purchase through.

I carry them in my t-shirt pocket under my outer shirt. Like I said I really don't like taking my phone out in public.
