It seems it’s always something when you are 76. This time it’s a hemicolectomy, right ileocolostomy…robotic.

That’s just fancy words meaning they are going to remove 8 inches of my colon. No problem. You have several feet of the colon, so what’s 8” or so. The guy performing the surgery is a pioneer in laparoscopic robotic surgery and has done hundreds of these. TOP people involved! 2-5 days in the hospital to make sure the GI track is operating as it should, with no leaks, then I will need 2-3 weeks to recover. Once that is done I can get back to training for my next power lifting competition (senior class).

The worst part is the prep. Pretty much like the prep for a colonoscopy. The torture begins in earnest on Monday. Tuesday night I’ll be watching the election results through the fog of residual anesthesia and pain meds. Perfect. I’m hoping to be set free after 2-3 days. I worry about Karen going back and forth to the hospital, but she has the route down.

Sooo, as you can see, I will be out of pocket, and incoherent, for a while. A full report, in triplicate, will be forthcoming. I would like to have a video of the whole operation to share but I doubt one will be available. Most people would not want to watch it anyway. Wish me luck.

2-3 weeks recovery and back to power lifting training? Your doc and his techniques must be really something to allow you to do that. Best of luck.

BTW, residual anesthesia sounds like the best way to watch the TV coverage of any election or big event. Personally, I'd take advantage of the dope, hit the off switch and sleep through it.

As a Colon-rectal cancer survivor I will be praying for you... and hope your stay is short and recovery quick... as anticipated.. that never quite worked out for me... whenever I went in for 3 days it was 12 minimum.. one because they didn't tighten the knot on my drain tube, so when they disconnected the vacuum pump my lung collapsed... when surgeon got back from vacation, ya I know, perfect timing, he was surprised to see me... snugged up the knot and 24 hours later I was good to go... unfortunately for the nurses and respiratory therapists I was in such good shape that I was annoying walking all over and fiddling with the menu so I could create edible food from the menu..
