Stunning Model of 1917 US Army revolver

Yes S&W history department told me that. No more information for a letter? Worth it?

The letter will tell you when it shipped, what it looked like when it left the factory, to what Armory it shipped (or what person, if it went to an individual) and how many were in the shipment.

Is it worth it? That is up to you.

A letter may also have the price.

Maybe someone with a letter would be kind enough to post it?

Kevin

Welcome back! It's been a while since you last posted, but this is a great way to get back into the swing of things. That is a very nice Model of 1917, and there are lots of fans here on the Forum. Mine is also from 1918, just a little later than yours and mine shows a little more wear. However, it's a great shooter, and often goes to the range whenever I take my Model 25-2. Get yourself some moonclips and go shoot it. Enjoy!

3 posts in 11 years! A regular chatterbox!

I don’t want Hawg Rider to be the only one showing a picture so, here is my Model 1917 Army, also in rougher condition. This one has numerous British proof marks all over it.

Looks great. I have several guns chambered like this. 1917s, 25-2, 1950 Army and several others. Who needs moon clips, I use my fingernails or a short wood dowel.

I have always had a soft spot for a nice 1917. You did well.
Here is SN 107322, not too far off from yours.

Pictures? Have shown this one # 6929, shipped Nov. 1917. Just about drippy mint. Now resides in a shadow box along with period ammo, period clips, and a 1917 dated lanyard thanks to a member here. It's a keeper, not a shooter. Big Larry

All this talk about the S&W M1917, has made me show the ammo I made for mine . . . .
This load shoots to the POA at 50 feet.
At first, I thought it too hot, and bullet too heavy, but ole’ Elmer Keith used it some . . .
However . . .Knowing how he loaded hot . . . .in baloon-headed cases . . .I LOWERED the charge somewhat!

This was my great uncle's Army issued 1917 revolver when he was stationed in Italy during WW2. The historical letter only states it was issued to the Army in September 1918. It has a second serial # on the cylinder and no one seems to know why.
Have the number matching smooth wood stocks but like using the checkered cherry ones on it. Also have a set of Pachs with a cut-out for the swivel. Need to take some better pix of this one.

Here is the letter from the one I recently posted so you can see what would be included. I got one for this gun and my navy victory very similar to what you posted! Letters just came this week. I got the letters just to “complete” the item and so someday when my kids are going through it they can appreciate the history.

Just ran across one, Serial number 857. I am surprised how highly polished & finished, all the past experience with 1917's they look like they've been in a war! I am trying to post some pix. Stocks are penciled with ser #, & all others match. No lanyard ring, and a fix across the top strap from what I presume to be two holes drilled, then filled & polished, but not perfect work. The rest of the gun is shiny new condition! Any suggestions to value with this ugly top strap, yes I know not the best picture. I will try to get a better one tomorrow. & how hard is a lanyard ring to come by?

Too bad about the missing lanyard and top strap “fix” in what otherwise is a very nice and very early 1917 Army with the serrated hammer and concave grips.
