I would carry one in 38Super , probably a Colt . I have a Tisa 38Super , but I haven't owned it or shot it enough to put it on my carry list . I sure wouldn't carry my Koenig PC 1911-2 38Super cause if it got confiscated I would be in tears .
Dan Wesson is probably the best made production 1911 made. Much more so than some of the most popular names. They have quietly made a name for themselves over the years and a loyal following.
This one here, a Kimber Ultra Carry W/laser grips in .45 acp. Light weight, accurate, and most importantly, reliable as the day is long. I carry it with 230 grain HST's.
A 1911 is a bit large for every day carry in my opinion, especially for a scrawny geezer like me. But if forced to choose it would be a lightweight Colt Commander in 9mm.
A carry pistol does not have to be fancy, but it needs to be reliable. For low cost 1911 carry, Rock Island Armory or Tisas/SDS Imports. That's my opinion and it's just that, my opinion, others will differ.
44 years later I still have my Colt Lightweight Commander .45 which was my first off duty gun. Back then you HAD to get the Summer Special rig from Milt Sparks. All the gun magazines said this was the hot setup!
These days a Springfield Compact Range Officer Elite 9mm (unfortunately discontinued). Lightweight Officers frame with 4 inch slide.
I have 7 guns on the 1911 platform. 2 are Colt Commanders (45 & 38 Super) a few GI clones and 2 Para-Ordebance LDA: 1- 4.25 double stack and 1- 3.25 (very compact)
For my EDC I carry a S&W 49 no dash! When I don't feel that's enough gun, I ADD a 45! Usually, the little LDA. If that isn't enough gun(s) I ADD a 12 gauge! plus I go someplace else!
As long as it is chambered in 45 ACP ... It will get the job done .
I usually go Full Sized 1911 , my current 1911 is an all stainless AMT Hardballer with ebony Grips from Kim Ahrends ... I like it !
But ... getting old and lazy and might would try a Lightweight Commander sized 1911 ... but the proof of any gun is in the shooting !
I carried the same Springfield Armory Micro Compact 1911 in 45 ACP all day, every day after retirement from LE for 18 years. I've carried various other full sized steel Custom 1911's in 40 S&W or 45 ACP as my off duty guns since the mid 1980's.
When S&W introduced the CSX, its small size, capacity and similar operating controls finally convinced me to try something else. The CSX has been my EDC since about July of 2024 and it has had exactly 1 malfunction in well over a thousand rounds and that was a failure to fully feed a round into the chamber in the first magazine fired.
