new layout.

Yeah, not a fan……..when they give us more control of the lay out I will be back. The all white background is tough on my old eyes, the old blue and gold colors were soothing and easy on the eyeballs. I get the concept of adapt or die but many of us are at an age where a change like this is apt to push us off the site. Kind of like being at an age were we to fall and break a hip, likely hood of surviving is very low for a lot of us. It’s a slippery slope for us old timers with changes like these we simply move on to that which is more familiar to us……..I never went back to the 1911 forum, and visit the colt forum very little after the Canadians acquired them and standardized their formats. I will check back in a few weeks to see if things look more appealing but I suspect this is one of those milestones that is simply another nail in my coffin…..kind of like when Peter Egan retired from Cycle World, I never went back, or when Jack Riepe passed away and never wrote again for the BMW MOA magazine….or having been a diesel truck owner all my life with Cummins, Powerstrokes, DT 466s, etc. But when mandated to use DEF and loaded their engines with electronics, I stopped owing diesels. There are moments, events in your lifetime that seem to be minor in the scheme of the would’s timeline, but in your own short 70-80 year lifetime are moments that drive you in a direction you never thought you would go….Its the cycle of life, alas. I lament that this might be one of those milestone events in my lifetime that I had hoped would never come……getting to a point where I monetize my collection and/or start giving it away…….at 70 the odds are diminishing that things will stay the same for me for a long time to come.

Change it from System to Dark.

Picture test.

Is that from your hard drive or a photo service?

I'm familiar with Xenforo from other forums, so it isn't a big jump for this guy. As with any change, there can be pluses and minuses. One big improvement is the responsiveness of the site. Gone are the hangs, blue screens and sluggishness. (y) Another major plus is the forum remembers where you left off in a thread. (y) That was supposed to work in the old system, but it never did it reliably for me.

Minor snags that I learned to live with in other forums: There's no way to convert notifications on watched threads to email notifications en masse. You can go to the watched thread list and do it a page at a time, but I have lots of pages of watched threads. Next, if you watch a thread, you only get one notification. If you don't go back to view the thread upon receiving the notification, the notifications stop. One and done. It does keep one's email less cluttered, but unless you see the notification, the site quits telling you about new posts in the thread.

The bit about thread notifications leads to another positive. (y) One can subscribe to subforums to get notifications of new posts; and it works! I never made it work in the old system. I tend to use email notifications to read forums rather than browse the site. Being email centered, I can follow what interests me and spot new stuff as it arrives while avoiding less interesting things.

To the folks making this happen: This is a great step forward. Thanks for making it happen!

Is there going to be a way to post pictures directly from the computer?
That feature was not available on the old forum software except for attachments. And, so far, it is not implemented in the new editor. My guess is the new software will replicate the old software scope of features that were limited for a reason. That being said, you folks are going to love the picture editing and text features which will allow sizing the pictures and wrapping text around them in the text.

The IT guru is still working on the conversion, but things are moving along nicely and getting better by the hour.

The search function works great! I searched "29-2" and received a long list of hits!

Finally able to sign in, too, although my usual bookmark didn't work and kept getting 404s but hopefully that will settle down. I think I got here this morning while doing an online search for "S&W Forum offline?" and clicked on a link. I was getting a bit despondent at not getting my daily fix :)

One small comment so far- I really liked the old emojis/smileys whereas it looks like the new format uses the more common (and seemingly limitless) yellow critters. I guess I may "eek" less but that may not be a bad thing. (Insert "roll eyes/sarcastic" here.)

Just tried the "dark" format, which I was used to. OK, but I preferrred the old S&W dark blue.

I had the same issue. Gotta make a new bookmark and chuck the old one, OBH.

On this new forum, I saw, to my surprise, that I have been, inadvertently, "following" a half dozen or so members. Hope I did not creep anyone out. ;) I "unfollowed" those whom I have been following. I'm not sending any messages here other than I am not, after 20 years on the forum, familiar with some of its more sophisticated functions. (Hey, some of us are slow learners!)
