The Last Gun You'll Part With

My 686, PERIOD! I would like for my 5903 to be in that category, but I can't get it sighted in for beans. It may have something wrong with the sight. I'm not as attached to my model 10, but having gotten rid of one before, I'd like this one to be permanent. Not an S&W, but my AR is so much fun I'll probably keep it as long as I'm shooting. My SKS is in the very fun gun category also. I'm not counting SD guns in this poll. Probably the last one of those to go would be my Shield.

I have many in this categories but if I had to make a choice it would be the 1897 Marlin my old man bought me for my 5th birthday. The OM beat the guy down to $8, from $10. A major coup for him but them 1955 dollars were worth a lot more than today’s money. Lots of lead went through the old 97.
Last one I personally would give away to a family member, same place all the family heirloom guns go. They are not sold.

TP2120092.JPGoo many family heirlooms to have just one.. grandpas shotgun? dad's first pistol? the 19-4 birthday gift from dad? uncle's shotgun he used on my first pheasant hunt whn Iwas 14? dad's custom 1911 touched by C&S? Can't do it.. but probably my late father's first handgun.. a 4 digit serial number Ruger Standard 22 pistol... restored by Ruger...

  1. High school M1 Garand issued to me in 1966 and sold to me by CMP in 2016.
  2. Walther P.38 and Mauser 98K my Dad picked up sometime after landing in Normandy, 6.6.1944.
  3. Colt 1903 .32 ACP shipped to the Washington, DC Navy Yard on 9.29.1917.

I can get it down to two. A 1939 Gas-Trap M1 Garand and and a 27-2 that was my first purchase back in 1979.

Cruiser - I have the exact same setup for my identical 27-2. Bought it in 1986. First gun for me and did not realize the value of the box, which I dismantled. Still pains me to this day. Love shooting it.

Back in 1958, as a high school kid, my uncle's business parter was a bullseye shooter, and let me shoot his S&W 1955 Target in .45acp. I was hooked; I have a collection of 'Pre-Model Number' guns, and before he passed my uncle's partner sold me that 1955 Target...'W" mainspring and all... and it would be the very last to go. Accurate, and big enough to use as a club if you run out of ammo! Mike

I can certainly appreciate that!

I will NEVER part with my 5” Model 27 (no dash). First run after the Registered Magnums I believe and probably better than 90%. Aside from the usual cylinder mark, it only has a tiny amount of finish loss (less than 1/2 mm and only about 25% around on the very front edge of the barrel). Unfortunately it’s on the left side, not the bottom.
I rarely fire it anymore and when I do it is always either a very light Magnum load or .38s.
I LOVE the rich, deep blue gloss finish. I got it in 1983 and STUPIDLY carried it (thankfully in a shoulder holster) for a few years. I was young and dumb and just didn’t realize what I had.
It might really wind up being worth something if/when whomever I leave it to decides they can part with it somewhere down the line. In fact I’m of the age where I have needed to make those kind of decisions.

I’ve got a good sized collection of handguns and I wouldn’t shed a tear over the sale of most of them…except my S&Ws. Actually, those are the only ones specifically called out in my will. Right now the Model 27 is going to my son while my other two Smiths (Model 65-4 and Model 15-5, both 4”), are going to my daughter. I’ve tried repeatedly to impress upon my son the value of that Model 27, at least to me, but even at 41 years old I just don’t think he gets it, while my daughter is probably more likely to hold on to hers for the sentimental value if nothing else. So, I really think I’m going to change that so that she gets them all…ahh, the decisions (others would call petty) that we Smith owners/lovers have to make!

I have owned over 400 S&Ws. Still have over 1/2, and I love/loved my .32s.....On the other hand, are my many Performance Center guns with the same serial #...all starting wit the Heritage Series and continuing when Jimmy Rae called me with the new guns that were coming and sent the same serial # to my LGS.....45 guns in all....Some have been sold and others were never made...a MODEL 616 in .327 Federal would be my go-to gun....the J-Frame is a bit stout in that caliber....
But the last gun I would have leave is only Custom Gun builds from scratch...
There were no .45s with a rail
There were no Super-Light-Weight .45s in Commander size....
There were no super accurate Commanders....
So----- I had my favorite gunsmith, Walter Frear of Damascus, MD...make it for me!!!!!
Caspian Titanium Frame with Rail.....
Damascus Steel Slide and Hammer.....
Kart National Match Barrel with Briley Bushing System......
Videcki Trigger....
XS sights... (pre-Red-deot time)
Hand-Checkering (Tedious on Titanium) and shaping of frame to match the slide.
Elephant Ivory Stocks with my logo...Dan Chesiak from Colt fame...
in 1994 it cost a fortune...but it is a tack driver and lighter than a modern scandium gun...
