I'm toying around with the idea of installing a muzzle brake on my 686+. Problem is, I can't seem to find any brakes. So I'm wondering if muzzle brakes on pistols is purely the stuff of video games and action flicks or what? Anyone with experience/opinions on the matter?

Agree with BTM, what’s your intended/ expected use?

Have you thought of Magna port? I had a few big bore guns given the magnaport treatment. Their work is superb

Self-defense is my primary reason for carrying. Thankfully, I've only had occasion to fire it on the range so far. So somewhere between range toy and self-defense, I'd say.

I’d vote no. Been there done that for USPSA with a heavily ported 586. It took light bullets and high velocity to make it worthwhile, but it did pretty much eliminate muzzle rise. Unless you are trying to shoot as fast as possible, ports are annoying.

I'll agree with BTM on this. It seems to me that you've gotta push bullets to a very high [or at least a lot higher] velocity to realize any benefit from the brake. I had Mag-na-port do a model 29 for me, and as was said, they did a stellar job of it, but I didn't think the results were worth the expense of having it done. Plus, IMO, it just ruined the look of the barrel on my 29 and I wish I hadn't had it done.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Thanks for the input, everyone. At least I learned about Magnaport through this. It's a good day if you learn something new.
