Looked great in all the pictures, even looked really good in my own pictures.

But I saw some things about it that made me suspicious. Specifically the right side. Specifically the sideplate. Fit is good, no signs of buffing, but it just didn't look right.

So there it is, direct white light doesnt lie, either the sideplate has been replaced or the entire gun minus the sideplates been refinished.
Oh well, she's a shooter anyways, but now I know to trust my gut.

Something strange happened, but the color case hardening is still bright, too bad it can't talk.

Take off the side plate and look for the assembly number. It should match the one on the yoke and frame. If not it's been replaced although the fit looks good.

Well that's strange. All markings look clear, all edges look clean, no sign of a refinish except for the obvious blue/black mismatch. They look like entirely different finishes under hard light.20250528_175300.jpg20250528_175703.jpg20250528_175726.jpg

that makes it a keeper for sure! great shooter/collector

The blue simply reacted to the parts slightly differently and the difference was enhanced over time as the metal oxidized. If you enhance the color with bright light, particularly at an angle, many guns will show a difference in color between the sideplate and the frame due to the sideplate not necessarily being the same piece of metal.

I have a 34-1 that had the sideplate completely discolored, but nowhere else on the gun. It was the strangest thing. Still shot great, but it bugged me a bit so I had it re-blued- just the plate.
