Very early Model 29 4-inch

I recently came into this lovely Model 29 no-dash with a very low serial number of 184021. Sending off for a letter on it now.
Great looking revolver, congratulations. I have a 44 magnum four inch four screw with serial number 176XXX. It was shipped in July of 1958.

The closest 4" units I find are:
S183936 - shipped May 4, 1960
S184076 - shipped May 5, 1959

Doc (Bill Cross) might be along to give you a definitive answer or a very close estimate.

As you can see from the above, they didn't ship in anything resembling serial order.

BTW, here's a 4" Model 29 with an interesting serial number - S184184. It shipped on February 12, 1959 (Lincoln's birthday). It is also interesting because it shipped with smooth rosewood stocks.

Looking over Doc 44's booklet "Early 44 Magnum Information" there are only a few earlier serial numbers that were marked as Model 29s. Hopefully the letter will prove interesting.

Jack,

Small world. S184184 is a nickel 4" that now lives in my safe.

Letter reads.....
"We have researched your Model 29 . 44 Magnum, caliber . 44 Remington Magnum, in our company records. These records indicate that your revolver with serial number S184184, was shipped from our factory on February 12, 1959, and delivered to H. H. Harris Co ., Chicago , IL. The records indicate that this handgun shipped with a 4 inch barrel, nickel finish and checkered Goncalo Alves target grips."

Got the letter! She also shipped out on Lincoln's birthday, Feb 12 of 1959 to none other than the George Lawrence Company. $86.06

There were three 4" Model 29s in the shipment: This one (S184021), S184054, and S184810

Interestingly the shipment also contained three Model 37 3" Airweights.

I don't have that number in my records, but some very close shipped in late 1958 to early 1959.

.I am adding a few photos of my 29. It only has three screws and it has a left hand thread ejection rod. I may need to get a letter to find out more, but this combination seems rare. That number over the mod-29 matches the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame.

S185817 is a 4-screw as it has the cylinder stop plunger screw in front of the trigger guard (it does have a 3-screw side plate which is correct). Apparently, the Model 29 was fitted with a new extractor rod with a left-hand thread at some point. The stocks date to the 1970s.
