I just picked up a nearly new in box 4506. It looks like a later produced gun based on features and the box. I have an older copy of the S&W book but I couldn't find the year of manufacture. I'm hoping it was manufactured the year I was born. If anyone can help the serial is TDN49XX.

Thanks in advance!

Nice find! A 4-digit date code is on the box end label. It's the "Spec Ord" number.
Post a pic of the label, AND pics of your 4506.

IIRC the 4506 was manufactured through 1999, and TDM and beyond was used from then until 2002. The Spec Ord number tells you the year and date... example Spec Ord # 9153 with a TDM SN would be June 3,1999.

The spec ord is 9237 and again the SN prefix is TDN

Thanks again!
1999 sounds right but suggest you email SW to confirm. [email protected] Decoding box end may or may not match SW info. In some cases there are significant differences in SW quoted dates - but more often they are a few days different. There seems to be some confusion as to what IS the "Manufacture Date" - is it the date pistol is assembled or the date box label is created or ???

You'll love the gun, I've 14 variations of the 4506 and 4566 as well as 2 645. I love smiths 3rd gens. Have several 5906s, 1006 and 1066, around 4 of each model. It's been quite a while since I seen one for sale. They did have one at the last show, looked like it had been through ww2, Korea and Vietnam and the guy still wanted 800 for it.

"237th day of 1999.August 25th"

Or maybe 237th day of 1989?
Possible, but unlikely - if 1989 it would have had stepped frame and D shaped trigger guard. 4506-1 had non-stepped frame and curved trigger guard. And I have a 4046 TDM5xxx box end code 9203 dated by SW as 8/1999 so thats why I said probably 1999. Picture would confirm.

Please tell me that you own and love 745's also!

If "no" then you have some shopping to do!

I don't see TEU in the list for serial numbers. My 4506 was purchased in the late 80's when S&W was pushing sales to LEO, could buy 9MM, 40cal, 10 MM and 45 for $380.00 Picked up a 4506 with a serial number TEU3XXX.

Book states "Reported" numbers, not all prefixes are listed.

I would place a bet on 1990 .

That would explain why it's not there. I think I bought it in 88 or 89.

If it helps to jog your memory, S&W definitely did not offer any 10mm or .40cal guns in the decade of the 80's. Both debuted in the early 1990's.
