Serial #S2....? It doesn't have an N in the number. Number inside yoke and on butt. Is there a chart showing Smith dates and does anyone know when this one might have been made? It is a 27.
Thank you

S2 is not a very good clue. Hey, that rhymes! I'm a poet and don't know it.
SCSW 5th Edition says S3 occurred about 1967-1968. S2 about 1959-1960.
These numbers are not always right, but are usually in the ballpark.

Serial S209002 shipped in June 1961.
Serial S209924 shipped in December 1960.
As has been demonstrated over and over, S&W did not ship in serial number order. So, we can only infer a ship date from our tables and known ship dates. From these 3 dates, it is likely your gun shipped in late 1960 or early 1961. An Historian's Letter of Authenticity will give you the precise ship date.

Thank you to all who replied. Was there much variance between the shipping date and the manufacture date for the Model 27s?

Welcome back, Lawrence. You didn't include much information about your Model 27, or pictures! We like pictures! Is your Model 27 a no dash or 27-1? Barrel length 3-1/2", 4", 5", 6", 6-1/2", 8-3/8"? Blued or nickel? Depending upon the barrel length and its popularity, there could be a big difference between the DOM and when it was shipped. IIRC, the long tubes didn't sell as well or as quickly as the shorter barrels that were more popular with LEOs and most civilians. Enjoy!

It's a 3 1/2, blue. It was holstered and carried for a few years so it has ample holster wear. It is a no dash 27 and still nice and tight. No pictures at this time. I do have some stag grips on it that I have had for many years. A gent on this site provided them and they look great. Sorry but I don't recall his name.
