Woods Carry 357 Search

The 8-shooter gets the nod every time, every day! There's a lot to be said for an EIGHT-shot .357 magnum stoked with Underwood or BB loads, plus the extra cost of those guns means you get a LIGHTER base handgun, so when loaded up it doesn't drag you under.
Exactly my thinking

I had a TRR8 for a bit. It was on the big side for any kind of carry IMHO.
Of course this is from a guy that caries an 11 oz, 360 PD in his pocket.
FWIW, I can't imagine a situation where 8 rounds would be "needed" in a woods gun. I'd vote a K or L frame would be the sweet spot. Your wants may vary.
Using that logic, no gun would be “needed” ever. Think about running into a grow op out in the woods, or a couple guys with bad intentions, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is more to a woods gun than be scared of bear or cougars.

Indeed, well put Sir. In north Texas, there are some Mountain Lions, but no bears to worry about.

My main concern is two legged predators. Many years ago I was in some river bottom land goofing off walking through the woods looking for squirrels. I had a 20 ga SXS and my 4 3/4" Colt SAA 45 pictured above. I had shot all 10 or 12 shotguns shells at birds, snakes or turtles and was walking out to my car. When I was maybe 100 yards in the woods from my car, a well used beater pulled up behind my car, parked and 3 scruffy dudes got out, had a short conversation behind their car and started into the woods towards me. Oh Sh!t, I shot all of my shotgun shells. When they were about 50 yards away, I swept my right hand back casually exposing my Ivory handled Colt and kept my hand close to it. They pulled up, had another conversation then walked back to their beater, got in and drove away. Although one never knows for sure, I'm pretty sure someone avoided death that day, because those boys didn't know that I was a very quick and accurate SAA pistolero. I'm still happy they drove away.

I have actually been carrying my Kel-Tec PMR 30 lately. 20 plus rounds of 22 mag is pretty potent.

Our most dangerous problems here in N. Florida are mosquitos, ticks, redbugs, and the occasional rattler. My regular CCW takes care of my woods walks. I felt like I needed to own a .44 Mag. so I bought a model 69. It is one of the few guns that I was as happy to get rid of as I was to buy it.
How come you wanted to get rid of it? I’ve heard good things about a model 69. Was it the unnecessary weight?

I didn’t think so Mike. My Son had one and I was surprised at how controllable it was. He carried it for his BUG when he was a police officer.

For me personally this question is answered with a 4” Security Six. 😉

Dan
My 3” 60 is a great woods gun. Got the rubber mono grip and that helps. It does recoil, but I’m not carrying a woods gun to run mass amounts of ammo through. With 38’s it’s nice. 357’s are tough but effective.

What I carry most is a 5" model 60 in a Simply Rugged cross draw holster. Works good while on the tractor. I sometimes carry the 3" version but I seem to shoot the 5" better. I like the light weight of the J frames.

I have them with barrels from 2.5 to 65 inches, they all work just fine. Pick one to match the season or wardrobe, simple deal.

I go on an annual bird hunting trip to the northern tip of New Hampshire. We call it bird hunting but it's mostly taking a dog and shotgun for long walks. After a very close encounter with a cow moose and her boyfriend I've been rethinking my woods carry gun. My 3" 60-4 is by far my favorite but the 5 shot 38 Special is a little light. I don't suffer from a shortage of handguns so I have tried quite a variety including a 3" S&W 66, a 2 3/4" Ruger Security Six and a Colt Delta Elite 10mm. Now I'm considering my 629 Mountain Gun that shoots really well with a less than max charge of 2400 and hard cast 240 grain semi wad cutters. It's nice to have choices. 😁

Usually I bring a pocketful of buckshot shells when I’m out pheasant or rabbit hunting.

You never know when you run across Big Foot.

Decades ago (late 70’s) a buddy and I were scouting a place to go bow hunting for whitetails. We were a few weeks pre-season and unarmed. We drove my old Scout down an old logging road, then hiked a couple miles back into a “wilderness area”. We were several miles from the nearest home. We were set upon by a good sized pack (almost a dozen) of feral dogs Big freaking feral dogs. They circled us growling and feinting in toward us. We yelled at ‘em, threw some rocks at ‘em all to no avail. Wasn’t scared of being killed (though I probably should have been) but was scared to death of being bitten (rabies shots). Carl and I retreated up a tree and wound up staying there for forty five minutes. They finally gave up and left. We got down a few minutes later and made our way back to the truck. The following day with an M1 carbine and a 44-40 Winchester we resolved that problem. Never, ever, since have I went into the toolies unarmed. You truly never know what you may encounter, either 2 or 4 legged. Be a good scout and “be prepared”.

I make it a point to never be unarmed out there, even when shooting.
Maybe especially when shooting as bad guys may hear a possible windfall.

At 80 I'm not strong and mean anymore. I get some remarks from family members about my nice one-off B.Goode sheath knife that I occasionally wear. They just don't understand the mentality of us old wackos. It isn't that we think that everyone's is going to kill and rob us, it's that we NEVER want to be put in a position of helplessness by some guy with the I.Q. of an opossum and a gun or knife. In NorCal these commies won't let us have a gun carry, so its a knife or my fists and I just had spine surgery, so the fists aren't flying anymore. It is getting so bad out there with absolute anarchy that in our old pea brains, everything is a potential threat and it is. There are people among us with the brain of a mole and the personality of a hyena. one wrong move and I'm in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. No thanks...

I can take my TRR8 with me if i want a 357. But more often then not then 1 of my 386pd's will go with me. When i do take a longer barreled gun one of my 10mm auto's or my 329pd goes in the holster.
