As a resident of Tennessee and a traveling musician, I tend not to spend a whole ton of time at home and drive all over the country year round.
Hence, I bring a bunch of revolvers with me and try to find cool beautiful spots of public land to shoot on, as there does not seem to be much public land for this kind of use east of the Rockies.
At least, this is what I gather.
Are there any other Tennessee residence here that know of public spots around Nashville apart from the WMA range near Ashland City?

Aside from that, any places in the woods/public land to shoot in the eastern states?
Or is it all private property? This is what it seems to be.

I was just south of St. George Utah this past week target shooting on BLM land in incredible surroundings.
It is a new and sublime experience for me to be outdoors doing that in such amazing surroundings.

As a traveling musician, I would love to be able to do this on off days all around the country, but finding the spots is the tricky bit.

I am even thinking of starting my website, or possibly a social media page that posts various spots that are legal and safe.
Most BLM and national forest land and national grasslands legal, and as long as there is a soft cliff, backstop or mound and no one around, pretty safe, but it’s not always easy to know exactly where these spots are and where they are legal or not.

I also let go a few round off of Zyzzx road exit just south of Vegas…. It was asking for it..

Anyone else have any other spots out west or in the eastern states?
Are these kind of closely guarded secrets?? I know people have their spots that they don’t necessarily want everyone to be at, and I get that too, that is a guy who is traveling and looking for opportunities. It would be great to know if I am close by any of these places while I am on the road, which is about 70% of the time.

Thanks.

There used to be a public range West of Tullahoma, TN off of Cumberland Springs Road. It is still showing on Google Maps. TWRA has a few ranges sprinkled about the state but, there are range fees associated with them.

Terry Walden owns and operates Walden Range on Sixteenth Model Road, North of Manchester. It is off of I-24, Exit 105. Range fees are extremely reasonable, $10.00.

There's likely to be more land that's open for the type of shooting you're talking about in the western states. Here in Pennsylvania some of the State Game Lands and State forests do have shooting ranges available.
There are also quite a number of shooting ranges through out the state with very nominal membership fees.
I do have access to land that I am able to shoot on as long as I clean up afterwards.....but I'm not posting it's whereabouts on any public forum.

We have public ranges here in the National Forests. They are pretty much back in the sticks and you aren't going to find as much wide open spaces like they have out west. Knowing somebody with private land you can shoot on is a gold mine and there are some private ranges with membership. And everybody is so uptight about liability it makes finding a place to shoot difficult.

You asked this 6/11/25

Most if us would prefer to keep our spots quiet and safe. Posting so any yahoo can stop in generally doesn't go with that.

Maybe this is one thing NY does well. Shocking I know. There is a ton of State owned land by different names and definitions. I only know of one that has an actual range but you can set up targets and shoot or hunt on all of it. As long as you DO NOT shoot live trees.
