My son inherited a 5" 4 screw from his wife's Grandpa who bought it new.1956 vintage. He has a letter coming. Was trying to find him a decent black box.I have the correct screwdriver and know these Black Boxes in decent condition are hard to find but thought someone on forum may have one to part with. Will try to post some pics when I see him next. Thanks, Mike

Think the boxes are specific to barrel length. Since there were fewer 5-inch guns as compared to 4-inch or 6 1/2-inch will be hard to find. Perhaps a box for a different length could be modified? Don't know the answer to that.

If its 1956 vintage, it maybe a 5 screw, with the 5th screw being covered by the right grip.

The description, part of it anyway, isn't likely to be correct. I believe all the 1956 guns were five screw and most were 6.5s with fewer than 200 four inch. A 5 inch four screw from 1957 is possible but according to the Standard Catalog is more likely to have shipped in 1958 and be in the serial number range S178000 to S179000. We need the SN and some pictures.

There is one known 44 Magnum with a 5-screw frame and 5-inch barrel. S153748 shipped on July 20, 1956. Three 44 Magnums (that we know of) with a 4-screw frame shipped in 1957. Serial numbers are S170040, S172846, and S173849. The first shipment of 5-inch 44 Magnums was made to H. H. Harris in Chicago on March 18, 1958.

Was a blue presentation box in 1958 with tools a cardboard box or hard box with hinges? Thanks for the info on this great S&W forum. Mike

Here is a 6.5 inch 44 Magnum shipped the same year and month as yours (July 1958). This is the type of case your revolver was likely shipped in.

There are 3 different Black presentation cases.

The bottom latch, oval type, was the first used on the pebble grain type case. The other 2 were used on smooth type cases. Sorry I do not know the years associated with each type case! The top case latch was used on the very first 8 3/8" Mahogany case, in 1959, which had the same type of liner used in the Black cases.

Joe...The early mahogany cases for the 8 3/8-inch 44 Magnums with the cloth liner also used the style of latch shown on the middle case in your post. I also have one of the first clamshell cases (May 1960) that features the same style of latch. If you have my book on the 44 Magnum, check out pages 33-35.

Thank you, Bill. I should have reviewed your book before posting! I have refurbished very few of the Mahogany cases with the top style latch.
