I put in a vent free fireplace with gas logs in the new house I just built. The salesman kept trying to talk me into it but I asked "how can a vent free fireplace work without an odor"? The logs are porcelain instead of ceramic and are set where the flames never touch them and sure enough, it has ho odor or smell of any kind and man, it cranks out the heat! My furnaces down stairs and upstairs barely turn on.

You guys are set. I'm too gimped up after 40+ years dealing with wood. This will be my second winter with a gas stove. Not as good as wood, but it works OK.

I know the feeling. That's one of the reasons I bought the mini excavator. It moves those 350 lbs rounds onto the splitter so I don't have to wrestle with them.

We have petrified pine stumps that are unearthed at major construction sites that tear off the top layer. Hard as concrete but busted up will catch fire with a match hence the name "lighter wood/knots." It was more common around these parts 40+ years ago. Joe

We always referred to that as "fat wood". And you're right, even wet it'll light with just a match. I always carried a few pieces when I was "woods walking" in the Mississippi Delta or at BIL farm in Arkansas.

I need to start on my firewood pile- haven't used as much in the past few falls/winters as they've been pretty mild save some snow we got here in January. Hopefully will get a bit more this winter.
